With the recent news that all of the "big three" automakers are profitable again comes even better news for city of Detroit. Chrysler announced that it is adding 1,100 jobs to its Jefferson North Assembly to support Grand Cherokee production, future Viper production, and the addition of a diesel Grand Cherokee to the production. From the press release:
"Our future, like the history of our brands, is interwoven with the City of Detroit," said Chrysler Group Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne. "Detroit long has been home to renowned innovators and craftsmen. So it is in the Motor City, home of our industrial heritage and a resilient people, that we are entrusting the manufacture not only of the ultimate American sports car, the SRT Viper, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee – the most awarded SUV ever – but also a diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee for North American markets.
"We believe that investing in Detroit is not only the right thing to do, but it is a smart thing to do as we work to write the next chapter in our shared history," Marchionne said.
The new third crew of approximately 1,100 jobs that Chrysler Group is adding at JNAP, home of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango, will be part of an operating pattern, called the 3-2-120 schedule, that allows each employee an additional 49 days off per year while enabling the plant an additional 49 days of annual production.

If sales of the JK-8 pickup kit are any indication, there is a bit of pent-up demand for a Wrangler-based pickup. Sales of the aftermarket kit are higher than originally projected:
Mopar plans on supplying as many JK-8 kits as it can to dealers, though given the size of each package, it's proving difficult for them to carry a large amount in stock. "The kit is too big and too complex to have too many on the shelf," remarked Gorlier. That said he's enthusiastic about the response so far. "It's exciting for an aftermarket product."

It appears that the stellar sales of the Wrangler and Liberty aren't slowing down one bit, as Chrysler is actively looking for employees to work the holiday shifts. AutomotiveDiscovery.com reports:
The only automotive plants that is going to keep running from the Detroit Three is the ones in Toledo, Ohio. It is the birthplace of the Jeep brand and Toledo’s wealth is rising and falling with the successes and failures of Chrysler’s off road marque, and this year, the automobile manufacturer is going to be seeking out volunteers that will continue assembling their hot selling Wrangler and Liberty SUVs.

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon was recently named the Four Wheeler of the year by Four Wheeler Magazine:
"The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon owned nearly all aspects of off-road testing during our annual 'Four Wheeler of the Year' competition," said Four Wheeler Editor John Cappa. "The grueling 1,000-mile trek put each contending vehicle through its paces in several on- and off-road environments, including high-speed graded roads, jagged rocks, shifting sand dunes, and more. The universal do-all capability of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon allowed it to outperform the other competing 4x4s, making it our 2012 Four Wheeler of the Year award winner."
The Toledo Blade has an article about Chrysler's difficulties in keeping up with the demand for Wranglers:
the automaker can barely build enough Jeep Wranglers to keep up with demand. It means that while Chrysler is publicly focused on the Liberty plant -- amid much fanfare last week -- capacity concerns to meet expected and planned-for demand worldwide for the Wrangler could result either in another upgrade to Toledo Assembly or a decision to make more of those sport utility vehicles in a Chrysler factory elsewhere.
Our friend Pearse over at JeepJamboreeUSA.com recently posted this quick video about their upcoming 2012 Jeep Jamboree season. For anyone considering a 2012 trip, this is a must-watch!
Chrysler/Fiat is investing 1.7 billion dollars in the replacement of the Jeep Liberty - and they may call it a "Cherokee":

The new issue of JPFreek online magazine is out, and while there's (as always) plenty of great content, you're going to want to check out the cover story first - a review of the 2012 Wrangler:
Out of the box, the 2012 JK Wrangler is the most capable and refined Jeep Wrangler I’ve ever driven. The 3.6L Pentastar V-6 has been reduced by more than 90lbs, compared to its 3.8L predecessor, helping to slightly increase approach angle. Also, the relocation of the alternator to a higher position on the engine helps to achieve maximum water fording.
...snip...
In essence, the Rubicon is far more capable and efficient than its predecessors in stock form. The enhanced powertrain, improvement of approach and departure angles, and overall drivability make the vehicle extremely pleasant to drive
The article also includes some nice video and a slideshow of the 2012 Wrangler in action - don't miss it!
