MiscellaneousChrysler CEO Confirms Jeep Brand NOT for Sale
Posted by mike on 2008/5/15 9:41:18 (159) reads

In an article on Bloomberg.com, Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli once again confirmed that the Jeep Brand is not for sale and that Chrysler's financial turn-around is on schedule:

Chrysler LLC, the third-largest U.S. automaker, is ahead of its 2008 goals for generating cash and running the business, and will post a ``significantly lower'' loss than in 2007, Chief Executive Officer Robert Nardelli said.

``We're not out looking for more money,'' Nardelli, 59, said in a Bloomberg Television interview today. ``We're not going to run out of cash.'' He said he isn't considering bankruptcy or selling the Jeep brand.

WranglerVideo: Jeep Engineers at Moab
Posted by mike on 2008/5/12 6:57:04 (195) reads

Chrysler recently posted a video about a trip to Moab that a bunch of its Mopar, Jeep, and Dodge Truck engineers took a few weeks back in order to test out some products as well as meet with journalists and customers.

The video is mostly eye-candy, but it does have some nice quotes in it from Jeep engineers talking about how much they enjoy going to Moab every year to get re-energized and to meet with the "heart of the brand".

MiscellaneousA Look at Diesels in America - Jeep Near the Front of the Pack
Posted by mike on 2008/5/9 9:38:00 (472) reads

Fortune has a great article on the future of diesels in America. This is a great read for those of you who are still on the fence about the least alternative "alternative fuel".

The article talks about new ultra-low-sulfur diesel that has been mandated by the EPA as well as the advantages of using it:

Thanks to technological breakthroughs, at least six automakers - starting with Mercedes on Oct. 16, Jeep in early 2007, and eventually even hybrid pioneer Honda - will be launching a fleet of New Age diesels. They promise to boost fuel economy by 25% to 40%, with huge torque and turbochargers to deliver the power American drivers crave.

...snip...

The first breakthrough is that ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel will roll out to the nation's pumps this month. The move was mandated by the EPA, whose 2009 emissions rules will hold diesels to the same standards - the world's toughest - as gasoline cars. (Environmentalists were thrilled, oil companies less so: The rollout will cost them $6 billion to $9 billion.) The new fuel eliminates 97% of sulfur, and it's also the catalyst for automakers to devise strategies to reduce the remaining pollutants.

The article is a great primer for the future of diesel fuel, despite the fact that it never mentions that the price of diesel is rising faster than the price of conventional gasoline.

SalesBuy or Lease a New Jeep and Get (relatively) Cheap Gas
Posted by mike on 2008/5/6 6:55:06 (591) reads

Chrysler LLC announced yesterday an offer that gives people who purchase or lease a new Chrysler vehicle a special charge card that only charges the customer $2.99 per gallon of gas - Chrysler will pick up the rest of the tab.

From CNN:

Chrysler also announced an offer that caps the price of gasoline at $2.99 a gallon for three years for people who buy or lease new vehicles from Wednesday through June 2. The offer is based on 12,000 miles of driving per year at the vehicle's rated fuel economy.

Customers will get a card for buying gas that is linked to their own charge account, Chrysler said. The customer will be billed $2.99 a gallon, and Chrysler will pay the rest.

Actual savings depend on what happens to gas prices over the next three years, but based on the $3.61 a gallon average price reported Monday by AAA, someone buying a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, which gets an estimated 21 miles per gallon in city driving, would save $355 a year.

Grand CherokeeDiesel Vehicles Still Cool? Not So Much...

With the recent spike in gas and diesel prices, the market for used large SUVs, diesels in particular, has plummeted.

According to this article in USA Today, the trade-in value for "anything diesel" has dropped $5,000 in the past 5 months:

The Orlando Sentinel says "Used-car dealers don't want the big vehicles on their lots anymore because hardly anyone is buying them. Some won't take them at any price."

Guy Lance, sales manager at Admiral Nissan in Pleasantville, New Jersey, told the Press of Atlantic City that he increasingly sees "people trying to trade in SUVs that are less than a year old." Lance added, "Normally, people don't trade out that quickly," but, "Let's admit it, when you go to a gas station and say, 'Just put $90 in my truck,' that's a little hard to swallow."

SalesApril Jeep Sales Down 13%
Posted by mike on 2008/5/2 6:42:57 (565) reads

No big surprise here, but Jeep sales declined 13% in April. Sales were down across the board for all models except the Patriot - which was up over 300% compared to April, 2007. Don't be too impressed though, as Patriots production and sales were still ramping up this time last year.

The rest of the Jeep lineup all had double-digit declines, led by the Commander, whose sales dropped 44% compared to 2007.

In the official press release, Chrysler is touting its fuel-efficient cars' sales increases:

Chrysler's lineup of compact vehicles continued to connect well with consumers this month. Total compact vehicle sales of the fuel-efficient Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot, which each achieve 28 miles per gallon or better in highway driving, reached an April record 17,977 units last month, up 16 percent from April 2007.

Full sales figures after the jump...

MiscellaneousChrysler To Dump Idea of Twins
Posted by mike on 2008/4/29 4:47:00 (1022) reads

While this isn't a shock to anyone who has been following Chrysler's recent announcements regarding "paring down the line", it is nice to see it in plain English.

Steven Landry, VP for North American Sales at Chrysler, recently gave a talk at Northwood University a dropped some not-so-subtle hints:

To give you an example: Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro, basically a similar vehicle with different skin and a little bit of different interior; Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango, same platform; Sebring, Avenger, same platform. We're not going to have vehicles like that. We're not going to have twin vehicles, one for one brand and one for another.

The only 2 vehicles that fall into this category are the Liberty (Nitro) and the Compass (Caliber, Outlander) and we're all pretty sure which one needs to go.

MiscellaneousChrysler to Tone Down Product Introductions
Posted by mike on 2008/4/28 17:30:00 (401) reads

Autoblog is reporting that Chrysler will be toning down its product introductions in the future - no more firemen hosing down Jeeps or cattle stampeding down Detroit streets or shattered plate glass windows.

Seems that Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli isn't a big fan of all the glitz (or the large budgets, no doubt):

All of these big debuts are meant to attract media attention, and that they do very well. But the word from Chrysler LLC CEO Robert Nardelli is that the party's over. Going forward, Chrysler will tone down its debuts to focus on the products and save a bit of coin by nixing the big-budget theatrics. Sources inside Chrysler note that Nardelli and his right-hand man Jim Press aren't into the pyrotechnics, confetti and glass-breaking debuts that have made Chrysler press conferences famous in the past.

WranglerVideo: Wrangler to Be Sold in China
Posted by mike on 2008/4/28 6:30:16 (269) reads

This week's "Under the Pentastar", Chrysler's weekly video news, talks a bit about the Beijing Auto Show and the fact that the Wrangler will be going on sale in China this month.

Unfortunately, the video doesn't talk about any of the Beijing Jeep products that we posted about last week.
