InsideLine is reporting that the new 4-door Wrangler Unlimited wil start at about $21,000:

The latest Jeep, which has midsize SUV proportions, is designed to butt heads with the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser and the 2006 Hummer H3.

Chrysler insiders tell Inside Line the Wrangler Unlimited will start at around $21,000.

The Unlimited will be offered in either two- or four-wheel drive and comes in three configurations: Wrangler Unlimited X, Sahara and Rubicon. Four-wheel-drive Unlimited X and Sahara models feature Command-Trac NV241, a part-time, two-speed transfer case. A Trak-Lok limited-slip rear differential is optional. Rubicon models feature an off-road Rock-Trak NV241 two-speed transfer case as well as electric front- and rear-axle lockers and 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires.

Re: Reports Indicate Wrangler Unlimited Will Start at $21...
I just went to the NY Auto Show today. I had a look at both the 2 and 4 door Wranglers. The 2 door is REALLY nice. It looks great up close. There is decent room behind the rear seat too. You can fit a few upright troller suit cases behind the seat.

The 4 door is pretty nice also. I'm just not used to seeing it with 4 doors so it will take some time to get used to. It has a ton of room.

One thing of concern though. I talked to one of the Jeep guys and he said that he had heard that the 2 door Rubi will cost in the low 30K and the 4 door Rubi will be mid 30K. I hope he is WRONG with this info. That's too much. Of course the 2 door will cost more than the 2006 but 4K is too much of a difference.

I plan on buying either the 2 or 4 door depending on the price but if the 2 door Rubi is over 30K it will be very hard to justify.

I dont see a problem with a 2wd biggie....nice option and will save some $$$ for folks that want a wrangler but dont neet a 4wd. Most folks just like the thought of offroading or want to look like they go offroad and most never do...what like 98% of suv owners. wow...I have a 05 rubi unlimited and i want to go offroading there is nowhere legal closer than 3 hours drive....and who has time or $$$ for a 6 hour round trip to go offroading unless on vacation.....due to this factor along a 4x2 would appeal to me but i know in certain weather conditions i would want a 4x4....oh well...cant please everyone...and i will wait and see if a diesel option comes around and how this new ethanol fuel will effect existing engines....

E85 - be careful what you wish for
I work at a company that makes OEM fuel systems. We make E85 compatible OEM fuel rails. All the seals have to be E85 compatible (that usually means Viton). Be careful what you wish for. There have been numerous problems with E85, and there are some shortcomings, too. To run E85, not only do you NEED a vehicle designed with an E85 compatible fuel system, but you have to be carfeul where you get your fuel from. Check out the cautions on this site:

In addition, this "clean" burning fuel is not readily available in most areas, is more costly (at this time) to produce, gets FEWER mpg, and can cause maintenance nightmares in your fuel system. Some OEMs even charge you a $1500 premium for this "upgrade" option.

To give you an idea of one of the problems, when Connecticut switched their MARINE fuel from straight gasoline to E10 (10% ethanol) everyone thought the change would be transparent. The "enviro-friendly" ethanol loosened fuel deposits (lacquers...) in some older boats' fuel systems (tanks, lines) and wound up clogging thousands of carburators, burning dirtier & less efficient, and costing the owners $$$ in repairs. And that was only E10! E85 can cause similar problems in cars not designed to burn it.

Be careful what you wish for. Keep your wishlist short --gas & diesel.

Here's how they end their article:

"What this means to you: The Jeep Wrangler grows up and gets more practical."

Actually, what it meant to me was that DCX didn't listen to all its customers that asked for Diesels and Hemis!

Wow, I was even smart enough to draw my OWN conclusions!

Don't want a 2WD Wrangler? Don't buy it! The problem is that people are buying 2WD Jeeps so Jeep keeps making them (unfortunately!).

Damn people - get a grip!

There will most likely be a diesel in a few years for a couple of reasons. A) Diesel gas is changing to a more low-sulfur version and I'm cure DCX is getting an engine ready for it. Ever wonder why all the other Jeeps in Europe and elsewhere already have a diesel engine and we don't outside of a small test run with the KJ to check demand? The Euro-diesel runs on low-sulfur juice - why go through all the trouble changing that engine to run on our crap diesel for a year or two? Big waste of money. Once we get the good fuel, the Euro-diesel engine will drop right in without too many changes. and B) No new model gets all options in the first year. You stagger the big options like that to keep the line fresh. I'm sure the Hemi will pop up in about a year or two and the diesel in 2-3 years. Not to mention a RHD option and a truck version and, the real gem, an E85 version.

And, btw, this isn't the first Jeep 2wd (and I'm not talking about the Cherokees, etc). The old DJs (postal jeeps) were mostly 2wd. Besides, a 2wd is better if you are planning on totally revamping the suspension anyhoo - cheaper beginning cost for the project and should help the overall model mpg (since the EPA isn't testing every variation to get an average) so lighter will help.

I TulsaJeep is on to something.
From the site:

"the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will arrive in U.S. Jeep dealerships in the fall of 2006, and will follow to international markets starting in the first half of 2007. "
This stands to reason that as the new low-sulfur diesel fuel is introduced in the US in 2007, that Jeep will make the European spec diesel engine an option in the US when it releases the the JK to the Worldwide markets in the first half of 2007.
