WranglerLiberty CRD MPG Actually Sucks?

We came across this little morsel while reading the sensationalized-named article, Pain At The Pump: Government Gas Secrets over on Yahoo! News:

For example, Chrysler says the four-wheel drive diesel version of the Jeep Liberty gets 22 mpg in the city. Consumer Reports tested it and found it got more like 11 mpg.
What what what?

When we went back and actually read the article (instead of our standard practice of skimming auto-related articles looking for the word "Jeep") - we learned that (gasp!) auto manufactures often test their vehicles under the best possible circumstances for calculating gas mileage. While this is perfectly understandable - can the Liberty CRD's milage really be 50% of what DaimlerChrysler would lead us to believe?

Let's hear from our Liberty CRD owners out there - what's the deal?

CR once said that a Toro lawn mower had better than average bagging capacity. Then they brought up another Toro mower with EXACTLY the same bagging unit and rated it poor. Go figure.

Here's a thread on the topic from the ABC news program 20/20:

I concur with all the previous posts on CR. We dropped it years ago. They are biased and entirely predictable.

We own a 2006 Liberty Sport CRD and get 19-22 in the City, 21-23 mixed and 23-24 on the highway. All highway for us is 70-75 mpg. It has 6500 miles and the mileage is slowly and steadily improving, too. The CRD is a very fine, rock solid vehicle and we pleased with everything about it including the mileage, handling, appearance, acceleration, and power. It handles a 4,000 trailer effortlessly.

I agree with BulletBob7, we get almost the same mileage. My wife recently drove from Raleigh, NC to West Virginia and back, getting over 25 mpg the whole way. After the first oil change at 6000 miles when the dealer also fixed a minor problem with a check engine light, we seemed to get about 10-15% better gas mileage.

CR sucks the big one. If it's not an econobox car that says Honduh or Toyoduh on it, they don't like it. I totally lost all respect for CR back in the early 90's when they reviewed the then-new F150 (the curvy body style) and complained that it drove too "truck-like". Wow, seriously, a pickup that drives like a pickup, what was Ford thinking... I might pay attention to CR when we're in the market for kitchen appliances or something, but when it comes to vehicles, especially trucks and SUVs, CR is absolutely worthless.

Just about everyone who has posted thier mileage on the various Jeep web forums are reporting over 20 mpg. I don't pay much attention to consumer reports, if I did I wouldn't be driving a Jeep.

Well, first off... why does anyone take anything Consumer Reports publishes as any more reliable than those grocery store tabloids that say Britney Spears baby was fathered by an alien? Consumer Reports publishes some of the most unreliable data out there and people believe it as if it was the Holy Gospel.

According to the owner-entered data on FUELECONOMY.GOV the Liberty CRD gets an average of 22.4mpg (pretty close to DCX's estimates).
