GreenCarCongress.com has an in-depth article on the new 3.0L diesel engine that will be making its way into the Grand Cherokee CRD next year.

The Mercedes-built 3.0-liter CRD produces 218 hp (160 kw) of power at 3,800 rpm and 510 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm—33% more power and 28% more torque than its 2.8-liter predecessor previously offered in Europe. Built in Berlin, Germany, the new V-6 CRD engine is entering series production.

Mercedes made enhancements to the engine design ranging from the mechanical system and airflow dynamics to the electronic engine management and emissions control.

The common rail direct-injection system has been refined, achieving greater progress in fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and combustion noise. Newly developed piezo injectors operate more rapidly than the previous solenoid injectors, ensuring a precisely metered fuel supply to the cylinders.

Can't wait to see this engine in the jeep line. alot of us have our fingers crossed that this engine will be offered in the wrangler and unlimited. Here's a dream machine - Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, 3.0 liter CRD, manual transmission. Can you say stump puller?!!!

From what I have read, this will not include the Bluetec system yet because of the EPA dragging their feet over the fact that the Urea cartriges need to be refilled/replaced every 7000 miles or so.

Well, leave it to the EPA to have a "piss poor" attitude...

...and there you have it. Expect to see this engine under the "Export" label only. In a few months, I'm expecting to read a DCX bulletin that looks like this:

"The Bluetech diesel will be available for specific target markets that demand specialty powerplants. Meanwhile, enjoy our new exiting minivan engine, America! ...it's what JD Powers, or any other mega bean counter operation, said the US market prefers.

Giving you what you want, DCX(r) We Care(tm)"

That 3.0 Liter Diesel Engine has been allready available in the export models since the release of the wk jeep grand cherokee. Here in Australia it's been available for well over a year. All the reviews I have read so far rave about the crd engine!! The engine is trully generation ahead of all the competition.

I think the 3.0L V6 for the Grand Cherokee and E320 will not include the Urea cartridges. I guess they found a way to pass the EPA bin...whatever- with the lower ULSD that is due to start hitting the stations this fall. That's why it won't be released until Q1 '07.
Now where did I see that...?

...that's 375 ft-lbs of torque for those still in the English system... that's pretty decent!
