AutoBlog picked up a Bloomberg article about Chrysler Group's possible expansion of its use of their inline 4-cylinder engine:

Currently, the automaker offers I4s in four vehicles, with another two on the way by the end of this year, but Chrysler is said to be considering adding an option for one in other models that now offer nothing smaller than a V6. One such model may be the 2007 Jeep Wrangler, which is currently available in the US with only a V6 despite a long history of offering a standard I4. Chrysler also limited four-banger availability in its minivan line-up.

A turbo intercooled 2.4L 4 Cylinder would make sense in the JK.

The 4 cyl. would make enough torque on the low end for off-roading, and the turbo would provide boost for towing, sand-blasting, street and highway driving.

The 3.8L mileage of 18/20 is already an improvement over the 4.0's mileage, even my 1997 2.5L with 160,000 miles.

I doubt if a turbo 4Cyl would get 28 MPG without some kind of engine shutoff apparatus, but I bet it would get combined mileage somewhere in the low 20's

The only way I could see this working well is if they used the 2.8L CRD, which will not pass the new more-stringent EPA regs.
A supercharged 4-holed gasser would be okay, but that adds a significant amount of cost to a base vehicle.

The new wider, longer, heavier, '07 TK with the 3.8L-V6 is going to have enough trouble keeping pace with the millions of 4.0L-I6's already out there.

So now what, Mr. Bell, Mr. Eberhardt, we need a friggin' 2.4L I4 "new World Engine" with the 2.4 liter - 172HP in the TK for what now?? MAIL TRUCKS would be the only logical answer.

If JEEP could land a new Gov't contract, mail or military, that would certainly make for some good sales numbers! How 'bout a bare bones stripper version of the TK? No rear seats, no spare tire, no carpet, no DSP, no A/C, $15K. Hmmm, maybe we're onto something...

OR maybe DCX IS starting to sweat the new 28mpg hurdle and considering this as a stop-gap measure?

God, please, NO! Say it isn't so!

What we need is the 4.0L V6 Nitro R/T engine in the TK. And the beat goes on...
