Wrangler2007 Wrangler Customer Presentation Guide

We recently got a peek at the 2007 Wrangler "Customer Presentation Guide". This document is used by Jeep dealers to educate their staff on the advantages of their vehicles versus the competition.

Since you're reading this site, you already probably know the advantages of the Wrangler over its competition. In a nutshell, here are the Wrangler features that Chrysler Group is recommending that dealers tell potential buyers:

-Purpose-built for off-road adventures
-Tough axle design
-Excellent off-road capabilities
-Extreme approach and departure angles
-More ways to the open air
-Adventure lifestyle options
-Rollover control
-Choice of tops
-Four removable doors

But what does Chrysler Group think the competition's selling points are? Here's a rundown:

Toyota FJ:

-Retro styling that reminds the customers of the original Toyota Land Cruiser
-Tough, aggresive appearance
-Standard skid plates and tow hooks

Nissan Xterra:

-Bold styling
-Standard skid plates
-Solid rear axle

Hummer H3:

-Hummer styling and identity
-Vortec 3500 3.5L I-5
-Off-road performance

What do you think? Is Chrysler Group highlighting the best features to best sell the Wrangler?

Re: 2007 Wrangler Customer Presentation Guide
Dealers that don't know anything don't especially bother me. Dealers that don't know anything and lie or make stuff up as they go, hoping that I don't know anything, however, is another story entirely. It's grounds for dismissal in my book. And I will do my best to make sure their supervisor agrees with me.

Dealers: It's OK to say "I don't know," as long as you try or put us in contact with someone who does. Don't be surprised if my first few questions start out simple and baiting and then progress to meaningful once you have proven you aren't going to lie to me.

My real complaint with the new Jeep is not how it is being marketed, but ith the color selection. White, Black, Silver, Grey, Dark Red, Dark Blue, Dark Green and Puke Green are not choices that remind us Jeep heritage or great adventures. Only one bright color. What happened to Solar Yellow, Blaze Orange, Lime Green and Electric Blue? Just because some people want a car with four doors doesn't mean they have become their parents.

Well phish, true Jeep heritage would probably be olive drab lead based paint and primer gray.

Expect one brighter color mid-year or for 2008.

You said it. The biggest two drawbacks are the engine and color. Why didn’t they use the new 4.0L 255 hp / 275 ft•lbf V6 instead. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_SOHC_V6_engine#4.0).

With the added weight of the new Wrangler, I'm worried that the 3.8L V6 will be missing the ooommff factor, and wind up being slower than the YJ/TJ's.

I think a much better choice (or option) would have been the 4.0L V6 255 HP / 275 ft-lbs from the Nitro R/T.. but with a stick, not just an auto.

I guess we'll have to wait & see what the road tests show...

You're probably right, but it's just wistful thinking at this point. Or wishing they improve for next year, maybe.

How is the I-5 a plus for the H3 ? Very few car companies who've tried a 5 cyl have had long term sucess with it. (usually oil probs) And I can't see GM getting it right. This would be something DC should have as a minus for the H3. I'd want something durable for an off-road vehicle. (and am hoping the V6 DC is using in the new Wrangler is close to the outgoing 4.0 in this area)

There selling it as an efficiency thing. As in, more efficient than the 4.0L V6 or V8 that the bloated-@$$ H3 needs.

The addition of a 4-door version of the Wrangler, which has a real "trunk" space, will significantly increase Wrangler sales. Too many people would love to have a Wrangler, but can't because they (previously) only seat 4 with virtually no storage space behind the rear seats.

Keeping the true Wrangler image and capability, plus adding the significantly stiffened frame and comfort options like power windows, will really help Wranglers move beyond the hardcore Jeep crowd.

'Hummer styling and identity'???

I should hope so, for humvee's sake! Sounds like they're struggling to find the pros...

Also, the FJ looks absolutely horrendous.

Nice site - just signed up... Take care

What I realise is the factory can spend all the $$$ to educate, the sales people need to take it on themselves to know this stuff!!!! Now jeep wrangler consumers are different, they actually know the history and product better than 99% of any sales people!!!! Owning the product will get you that specific knowledge!!

Re: 2007 Wrangler Customer Presentation Guide
the Wrangler is the one product line that doesnt need any help in selling. in fact 85% of Wrangler buyers never considered anything else! the 4 door has been so much anticipated that a salesperson saying the fj has irs will do nothing to deter the consumer from a purchase. rare is the time a customer actually expects a salesperson to know all the details of all cars built, though we try to master it all it is difficult and customers are pretty forgiving. most Jeep customers know more about the product than the salesperson anyway, they have known all about the new Wrangler for much longer than the info pack that got sent out. the real problem isnt unique to dcx, most of the time consumers walking in the front door of the dealer have more and, more accurate info then the dealers! all factories should do a better job of educating thier retailers.......

I've got a copy of this guide and there are some errors in the info... the worst of which is that the guide states, IN TWO DIFFERENT PLACES, that the FJ Cruiser has an independent rear suspension. Good job DCX, way to make your sales people look like even bigger idiots.

Absolutely. Chrysler doesn't sell many Wranglers but the ones they do sell go a long way towards toughening up the brand image. They sell Wranglers to 10 people so they can sell Grand Cherokees and Liberties to 100 other people. Jeep is seen as a tough rugged brand of vehicles and the Wrangler does the most towards keeping that image.

How about mentioning six speed manual tranny, available locker, turbo diesel available outside North America, and a comparison of fuel economy and ground clearance. Hmmm ... better not mention mini-van engine.

Funny, but the Wrangler sells about 70,000 to 80,000 units per year. The Liberty sells a little more than twice that and the Grand Cherokee sells about 3 times that.

Let's not exaggerate the numbers.

Fine. They sell Wranglers to 79,017 people so they can sell Grand Cherokees, Liberties, and Commanders to 397,515 other people. Somehow I don't see my point being any less valid. In terms of yearly sales, the Wrangler is an outright failure compared to other DC vehicles but that's not why they keep it around. And for what it's worth, I am very glad they do keep it around.

FWIW, I thought your point was valid when you guessed at the numbers. I think you can also throw in Compass and Patriot Numbers starting this year.
