Technoride.com recently got an up-close look at Chrysler's new 20GB in-car entertainment system:

Chrysler raises the bar on in-car technology with the MyGiG: a 20GB hard drive embedded in the dashboard for ripping CDs and for storing navigation data. Included is a Gracenote lookup engine to provide artist, track, and title information; this is the first use of Gracenote in a new-car audio system in North America.

...snip...

The MyGiG hard disk holds navigation data, system software (about 1GB), up to 1,600 MP3 or WMA files (allocated a bit less than half the hard disk), and the Gracenote lookup engine. When you rip a CD, Gracenote music ID software provides the artist, title, and track information for the most popular of its 4 million CDs on file. You can also upload photos for a slide show and select one to be used as a screensaver.

...snip....

The MyGig will be available initially in fall 2006 in one car from each of Chrysler's three brands: the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Nitro, and Jeep Wrangler. There's also a 20GB hard drive in the console of the $85,000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class LINK, and while they're both sourced through the Harman Group, a Chrysler spokesman says they're different, particularly since the Mercedes uses its drive for navigation data only.

You can check out this option - as well as all others - in the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Fleet Buyers Guide. Check out the other 2007 Jeep Fleet brochures at https://www.fleet.chrysler.com/

Re: Jeep Wrangler to Get Optional 20GB Entertainment System
Handy option but I'm wondering if DCX is using a full sized hard drive like a PC uses, or a micro drive simular to what the Ipod has. They are tough but I wonder how long they will last in extreme weather and driving conditions. And ripping CD's while driving sounds like a dumb idea unless the CD drive has good error detection to keep it from skipping.

Gripes: it proably wont play any copy protected M4P files downloaded from Itunes or Ogg Vorbis files unless you convert them first to Mp3 or WMA. And only 20 Gig's? That will fill up fast if you have lots of CD's. I hope theres ripping options that will allow you to set the bitrate. I bet there wont be any way to transfer your Mp3's backwards from the MyGig drive to the USB flash drive. And I agree with others for the price at this time, you're better off getting an Ipod.

Re: Jeep Wrangler to Get Optional 20GB Entertainment System
If ever a JEEP was built by the factory to be ripe for modification, it is the JK...Case in point...

1. Cable shifted transfer case means no shifter binding or relocation brackets when modified with a flat skidplate, or body lift.

2. CV joint driveshafts eliminate vibration when used with a suspension lift.

3. Wheelwells are made for 33" tires.

4. full fender flares up front are easily replaceable for adding wider tires, or replacing off-road damaged ones.

Right off the bat my JK 4 door is getting a 1 inch body lift, Rubicon springs, a flat skidplate and engine mount lift. Maximum ground clearance without raising the CG too high.

Re: Jeep Wrangler to Get Optional 20GB Entertainment System
All, I tried to purchase the Jeep Unlimited Rubicon today at the dealership and was pleasantly surprised to find that they are taking orders. Bad news.... the 20GB Nav system is listed as "Late Arrival" and is not available and the system will not let you process the order with it listed as an option. THe dealer was very hesitant to place the order without (i want the option) because he believes that it may only be installed at the facotry, not an aftermarket part. Any news that can be shared would be great. Thanks.

Re: Jeep Wrangler to Get Optional 20GB Entertainment System
My only problem is the size of the Hard Disk. This thing is going to cost some money, so why not spend $50 more and put in a 60GB drive? Or have options for more.

My CD collection on MP3 is about 28GB, not including the 900 Phish shows and 300 miscellaneous shows (~12TB in flac or shn files). Now I could weed out the crap my wife listens to and get most of the stuff I like into 20GB, and then use the ipod for a rotating selection of live shows. I think I'll wait until Apple releases the next gen ipod, hopefully with 120GB.

This is definitely a good thing, though, DCX!!!

The display can be used as a DVD player when standing still.

Imagine, your lowly Jeep Wrangler will have a touchscreen navigation system with USB, U-Connect, and a hard drive that is superior to your neighbor's Lexus!

Re: Jeep Wrangler to Get Optional 20GB Entertainment System
I found an article indicating that it is a $2000 option in the Seabring, which interesingly enough is 8% of the $25000 (un-optioned, as I understand it) Seabring purchase price. This may be erroneous info...seems too high for mid-market vehicles. That may have been with the rear seat monitor and audio-out included. If so, should be cheaper for the Wrangler. Incidentally, I can't find any article stating that the DVD can be viewed on the head unit when the vehicle is not moving, as stated elsewhere in these posts. Could someone please direct me to it if you have seen this info? Thx

The info about the DVD being visible on the front screen when it is in park is right there in the linked Technoride article.

Re: Jeep Wrangler to Get Optional 20GB Entertainment System
Adding a simple computer like this to a car will be intresting? I bet the USB in the front will have a more important function than loading music. I think it will be used for software upgrade/fixes and to update the maps. DCX will need to add a computer support page to the website to hold these "hotfix" downloads. I'm thinking that would be a first for a car Co.

Re: Jeep Wrangler to Get Optional 20GB Entertainment System
Probably right about the upgrades via usb since at least the maps will need to be updated eventually. A couple of features on this head unit that will be useless to the Wrangler buyer:
UConnect - good luck trying to have a handfree conversation with that wind noise, "Freedom Top" or no. Not that I am complaining, I find wind noise an excellent excuse to shorten my calls.
DVD Player/Second Audio out - unless I missed it on the spec sheet, no rear DVD on the Wrangler or Unlimited, not that it couldn't be added Pimp my Ride style in a headrest. However, and I'm no Wrangler purist (see below), if you can't find enough entertainment in your MP3 collection and the Wrangler itself, go for the Seabring, as you are unable to be entertained.

And can I expand the storage capacity? My iPod is getting full. Sure they will still have the Aux jack, but I want the intergration so that my factory head unit will change tracks and playlists from my iPod. Good thing I'm not in the market for a TK. Now if I could retro fit this into my wife's XJ....

It just keeps getting better. Wrangler purists won't be impressed of course, but never the less, this is exactly the kind of thing the Unimited target market is after.

$%@& the "Wrangler purists". They're a bunch of elitists. First they'll tell you that your Wrangler isn't a real Jeep becuase it has square headlights...then it's not a real Jeep because it has coil springs...then it's not a real Jeep because it's made by DCX...then it's not a real Jeep because it has a HDD player in it, or has 4 doors, or ESP or because it is bought and not built. It's a real Jeep. Times change and so do vehicles.

Sorry for the rant

That's an awful lot of opinions for someone who states that they are not in the market for a "TK". Good thing, too, because a "TK" is not a real Jeep either. It's a JK.

P.S. A real Jeep doesn't have electric windows. Add that to the list.

Yeah that's the problem with ranting, don't always remember to double check before I post. The rant was referencing wrangler purists and all Jeeps, not just the upcoming 2007 model. I also forgot that real Jeeps don't have IFS (that's for those liberty haters out there).

I don't know much about "real jeeps" but I do know most of their modifications are not covered under warranty.
Built vs. bought? It doesn't really matter as long as you're on top of the rock before the Hummer.
Keep those delicious options coming DCx!
I like the MyGig just as much as the Rubicon's lockers.
