CompassCompass Gets Slammed in Consumer Panel Review
Posted by mike on 2006/8/3 16:23:00 (1419) reads

The Detroit News recently set its consumer automotive panel loose on the 2007 Jeep Compass and the results aren't pretty.

But things turned ugly when the panel, which includes a Southfield hair stylist, a University of Michigan freshman and a Detroit bus driver, got behind the wheel of the Caliber's sister vehicle, the much-anticipated 2007 Jeep Compass.

After putting nearly 2,000 miles on three Compasses over the course of two weeks in July, an equally amazing 10 out of 10 panelists said they wouldn't buy the compact SUV, which is Jeep's first front-wheel-drive, car-based model.

Only two out of 10 said they would recommend the five-passenger Compass to their families and friends. And one of those, 21-year-old Detroit resident Meah Khrysteana Tweh, said she did so with reservations and thought it would be suitable for a "mature" audience only.

The panel not only hated the newest Jeep, they expressed concern that the car-like vehicle -- which the Chrysler Group describes as a "breakthrough" product -- was pointing the brand in the wrong direction.

I wonder how those panelists would have reacted had they been given a REAL Jeep to drive (like maybe a GLADIATOR!!!).

Guess it really comes as no surprise. They are only confirming what we've been saying all along!

Re: Compass Gets Slammed in Consumer Panel Review
This is a repost of what I posted in another thread yesterday...

I am not completely opposed to the idea of the Compass, I am opposed to it's execution.

The vehicle should be equipped to go head to head with another ugly little car, the Suburu WRX.

4WD should be standard / low range optional.

The engine should be turbocharged.

The design should be more aggressive (like the original Compass concept vehicle (not the Frankfurt one)).

The suspension should be heavy-duty,capable of taking a few jumps instead of being geared for street driving.

It should be marketed to active young people not specificly to urban/suburban markets.

The advertisements should show the Compass tearing through the desert instead of cruising along a city street.

Re: Compass Gets Slammed in Consumer Panel Review
From Wikipedia:

The Cadillac Cimarron was a compact car built by Cadillac based on the GM J platform. It was first introduced in 1981 for the 1982 model year, and sold through 1988. Despite the car's many strengths, it was perhaps the least successful model in the history of Cadillac and arguably, did much to stain the brand's once untouchable prestige due to its poorly-hidden economy car roots. According to Car and Driver, current Cadillac product director John Howell has a picture of the Cimarron on his wall captioned, "Lest we forget."

I immediately thought of the Cimarron (and Catera) when the Compass was introduced. Jeep is hurting brand image with this vehicle whether it is a quality piece or not. How long before Dr. Z has a picture of the Compass on his wall?

Re: Compass Gets Slammed in Consumer Panel Review
There was a write up on this article in this am.autoblog

One of the my favorite excerpts was this :

"Said one panelist, "Jeep, to me, no longer can justify having that 'rugged' reputation attached to its brand name. A Jeep is supposed to bellow 'run me into the ground.' Instead, this Jeep says, 'You guys want to go to the mall?'"

With the 07 2WD Jeep to the Compass all I can say is ...so true.
