Liberty2008 Jeep Liberty Spy Shots
Posted by CanJeepYJ on 2006/9/21 13:54:04 (3771) reads

Edmunds.com along with the windingroads.com have several reveling spy shots of the next generation Jeep Liberty courtesy of KGP photography.

The next gen Liberty will be avalible come the third quater of 2007.

All of the spy shots can be found here and here.

A short discussion on the next generation Liberty can also be found (with old spy shots) here

Here are some styling points that Edmunds make about the Liberty:

It appears to be a few inches taller than its Dodge brother--in the name of utility, and a closer family resemblance to the Jeep Commander.

The Liberty's revised packaging results in a larger windshield, and revised roof pillars, which means that the Jeep shares few, if any, body panels with the Dodge.

Although the Jeep's door panels are cleanly styled, they have a bit more surface development than the smooth-skinned Nitro, giving the Liberty a slightly chunkier look. The Jeep also has a different roof rack setup.

On to the rear, the Liberty gets revamped tail-light lenses and a reworked rear bumper, but the changes are more thorough than that. The Liberty's taller rear window is hinged and has a grab handle, meaning that the rear glass can be raised independently from the rear hatch.

With the arrival of two sub-Liberty Jeep models--the Dodge Caliber-based Patriot and Compass--the next Liberty had to do some growing up. And it looks like it has. The 2008 model promises to be a more substantial vehicle moving away from the entry-level.

In order to meet 2007 federal crash test regs, no more gas tanks behind the rear axle. That's why the tanks on all the new '07 Jeeps are side saddle under the passenger side. Look for the spare on the new KK to be tucked up under the rear in place of the gas tank, just like on the WK and XK.

It's still IFS of course, like DCX would go *back* to a solid front axle??? Rear axle is probably an AAM unit like what's used in the WK and XK, not a Dana piece.

Options and equipment will probably be closer to what you find on the new Unlimited, vs the Grand or Commander. Given the new size and styling of the KK, DCX can't make them too nice, othewise they'll overlap the WK/XK too much.

If they don't hang a Compassuglyass front bumper on it I have to say I like it better than the current Libby styling wise.

On one of the rear pictures you can see that the spare is tucked underneath by the axle Makes me wonder where the gas tank went.
For some reason the rear axle doesn't look the same as on the current KJ.
From what I can see of the front I'd be surprised if it doesn't have IFS again. I can't complain about how my IFS has performed and towing the camper has gone well too. Lets at least hope they've resolved the recurring ball-joint issues.

The fuel tank has to most likely moved forward of the rear axle to meet the new Federal crash standards. It most likely is sitting side-saddle on the driver's side (much like the WK, XK, JK/JKL fuel tanks).

In one of the articles I read, said that it will indeed continue with an IFS and a five-link (solid axle) rear. Hopefully, DCX's suppliers have the ball joint issue figured out now (or if not, hopefully DCX selected a different supplier).

Where's the spare? Surely they didn't tuck it up underneath. Looks like it must be in the cargo area a la the xj.

These shots are getting me excited for the kk. The first set that came out made the machine look like crap. But with all the other angles and with the pics being more clear, you can really see what they're doing here. I just wish they'd have kept a nose more like the '05/'06 kj renegade with the tall grille, flat hood, and wrangler-style looks. I like the boxiness better than the kj, but I wish they could have found a way to work in truly round headlamps and a tall, wrangler-style grille. But still, wrap one of these up in renegade trim with skidplates, rock rails, tow hooks, and a lightbar and I'm game.

They went away from the Wrangler like front end because it would then be too close to the new Wrangler Unlimited.

The dimensions of the JKL and KK will be about the same but the KK will be more upscale in trim (much like the WK and XK).
