MiscellaneousFuture Cummins Diesel For Jeeps?

We've had several people submit stories about the recent Cummins Diesel announcement that they're going to start producing a light-duty diesel engine at their plant in Columbus, Ohio. The interesting part of the story is that they're going to produce them for DaimlerChrysler.

There's no information about in which present or future vehicles they'll be used in, or if the engines will incorporate BLUETEC technology (sounds redundant, we know). Regardless, enough people seem interested in the possibilities, so we thought we'd throw it out there for everyone to see.

Here's a quote from the (very short) article:

The company, which is enjoying strong demand for its biggest on-highway engines because of looming U.S. clean-air rules, said it plans to spend about $250 million to set up the new line inside its existing manufacturing facilities.

My only fear is if these engines are released before 2010, then they will still be required to use ULSD. I have not seen a single service station in Minnesota that has ULSD. I have seen Low Sulfur, but now Ultra Low Sulfur. The GC CRD looks good, only if there are more ULSD service stations would it be better.

Future Cummins Diesel For Jeeps? - Correction, Please
FYI, Cummins Engine Company's home town (and location for the future production of the newest line of small engines for DCX) is Columbus, Indiana - NOT Columbus, Ohio.

I read the Cummins press release, and I read the article as saying NO LATER than 2010...It's almost 2007 and it appears that they have been testing this engine since 1997.

Remember, the new emissions standards kick in 2008, and that means 28.1 mpg (by 2011) for the SWB Wrangler and slightly less for the LWB.

Speaking of SWB Wrangler, I saw one at the Jeep dealer today. Looks nice but I am still sticking with the 4dr.

I would be dissappointed if we didn't see this engine sometime in late '07.

I'd love to see this engine in the JK...It would appear that the light duty engine would out-accelerate the HEMI, (or at worst, equal it) and get better mileage without any MDS system, and probably double the towing capacity. Cummins makes a great engine, and they just keep getting quieter every year.

By the way, with the YJ and the TJ having production runs of nearly 10 years, how is 2010 the 'next genereation Wrangler'? like I said. it's only 2007 (almost).

If you go to Cummins' website (www.cummins.com), their press release states that they plan to START building the engines in 2010. Looks like next-gen Jeep, at least for this new Cummins engine.

Of course, that may not rule out the diesel engine being offerred overseas.

A New Hope

Here is a link from the DOE that includes some testing using 4.7 and 5.7 V8 engines vs. the new Cummins light-duty diesels.

It looks like they had already passed most of the reqs back in '05.
I say, start equipping the JKL Rubicon's on Jan. 1, 2007 and make a huge press blitz out of it.

If you build it... they will come.

Hallehula. All these weeks of reading stories about the gasser JK was getting me depressed. I really hope something materializes from this. Small, good torque at low rpm, and offered in a manual. All controlled by a MODERN open source onboard computer, which could be read by todays laptop computers (and reprogrammed if needed!)

somebody pinch me.
