TheCarConnection.com just posted their full review of the all-new Jeep Patriot:

To our eyes, the Patriot's angular styling is markedly more attractive than that of the soft and squishy Compass. It looks more expensive than the price tag would suggest, and is instantly recognizable as a Jeep, what with its round headlamps and seven-slot grille. Project chief John Segalia likes to call the new Jeep the "spiritual successor" to the old XJ Cherokee, and on paper, its dimensions match up nearly to the inch.

...snip...

Our biggest complaint was with the continuously variable transmission under extreme acceleration. Heading up steep hills, the engine would race to redline and hold there as vehicle speed caught up. This "motor boating" is a phenomenon common to CVT design, but with the Patriot powertrain, the result was an unpleasantly brash and raucous roar from under the hood. Under less aggressive driving, both engines were acceptably smooth and reasonably quiet.

...snip...

The SUV market has become both crowded and confusing. There are simply too many options to keep track of, whether true utes or cute-utes. But anyone looking for an affordable, capable and fun-to-drive compact SUV, it would be making a mistake to leave the new Patriot off their shopping list.

Check out the entire review.

yea. It can go offroad. I think this picture speaks a lot about what this new sport utility can do and where it can go. This is a pic from the review on edmunds.com

The article states that the Patriot is available with the 2.0 liter World Engine. I think that is incorrect. I believe all Patriots come with the 2.4L World Engine.

The article is correct. The 2.0L engine is available on the 4x2 Sport trim, with a $200 discount, according to the ordering guide.

I like the look of the Patriot and should be a good vehicle for Jeep, although in competition with the compass. Looks like a mini Cherokee with all new features. I will be driving my 05 unlimited Rubi for years to come...no regret...but sure would like an 07 rubi...

Overall I see the Patriot completely hurting any chance of Compass sales. If I walked onto a dealer lot and started looking at the two... the Patriot is more attractive and is a little less expensive (although the Compass probably is less expensive due to discounts).

I wouldn't mind a Patriot but right now I am already at 3 Jeeps (Commander, Cherokee, Willys Pickup) and there about 4 Jeep/Willys products on the list before the Patriot (new Wrangler, Willys Aero Ace, M38 (not M38A1), Willys Wagon). By then my garage, driveway, and the street in front of my house would be full with no room for the Patriot.

I read this review yesterday, and have to admit that I'm feeling stupidly excited about the Patriot. I had ignored it for quite a while, but suddenly got very interested in it yesterday. Can't wait to see one on the lot. This is looking like my next new Jeep.
