Thanks to Jeff for spotting this Patriot review from AutomobileMag.com.

The Patriot competes with the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, and the Hyundai Santa Fe. In this company, the Jeep looks far more like a tough-guy off-roader than its curvaceous urbanite rivals. Inside, the Patriot's upright dash and flat expanse of hood make you feel as though you're in something substantial--more truck than minivan--and the simple controls are logically laid out.

And while it isn't particularly fun to drive on-road, this Jeep offers good ride quality and competitive dynamics that are miles ahead of the Wrangler and the Cherokee before it.

...snip...

Even though the Patriot is six years late, we can't think of a better replacement for the Cherokee.

It's a pretty short review - check it out.

I thought the Patriot was ok untill I see more and more of them up close.

That video of it "off roading" with a wheel in the air all the time and about 20 points on the vehicle a 1/4" away from smacking something at any moment just depresses me. From the article "It's not Rubicon-ready, but the Patriot is actually pretty good off-road, which is all it needs to be." How bout that for a tag line Jeep "pretty good off-road".

I think I would rather have a Subaru than a Patriot. At least I could actually get some sportness out of it.

Sigh. I hope they sell a zillion of em anyway I don't want them to be a failure.

Unrelated note: I saw what I thought was an ugly as hell Aztek pass me on the freeway. I was confused because the paint was really shiny and I was ripping the guy in my mind for having such a shiny Aztek...then I realized it was a Compass. Not joking, sigh.

As any number of XJ owners have stated on this board and elsewhere: You will be disappointed if you think this thing will perform like an XJ. It won't and it's that simple.

It's a nice addition to the Jeep lineup, but, it IS a CAR based vehicle.

In my mind, the XJ was THE original Wrangler Unlimited minus the removable top. Same drivetrain, somewhat same interior, etc.

As for the Patriot, I dunno how much higher than the Compass it should really be regarded.

What would be really funny to see..is a video of the Patriot and the Compass "racing" through the Rubicon Trail...just to see which one gets the furthest...
