LibertyNY Auto Show: All-New Liberty and Ginormous Camp Jeep (UPDATED)
Posted by mike on 2007/3/28 9:36:41 (2784) reads

With the New York Auto Show just a few days away, Popular Mechanics has one final spy shot of the all the Liberty - which they describe as a "little more than a Dodge Nitro redecorated with traditional Jeep styling details."

UPDATE: Popular Mechanics has a spy shot of the slightly re-tooled Grand Cherokee that will debut in New York as well.

From the official press release, it sounds like the mini "Camp Jeep" at the auto show will be anything but.

Camp Jeep New York will be bigger and better than ever and entirely outdoors at the New York International Automobile Show (April 6 -15). At 45,000-sq.-ft., Camp Jeep New York will transform the entire Inner Roadway of the Jacob K. Javits Center into an off-road driving adventure, giving consumers an opportunity to truly experience some of the world's most capable 4x4 vehicles.

The highlight of the exhibit is the Jeep Trail Rated(R) Test Track which includes water fording, ground clearance, articulation, traction, and maneuverability demonstrations. The track is an off-road playground where consumers can ride in models of the 2007 Commander, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited.

The test track will consist of seven different surfaces -- dirt, mulch, gravel, rocks, water, wood and asphalt -- and includes an 18-foot vertical climb on a Jeep Mountain. Consumers will also have the opportunity to scale a 16-foot climbing wall, play video games featuring Tony Hawk and have their picture taken with a Jeep in the Jeep Photo Zone. And kids ages 3 and up can test drive mini Jeep vehicles on the Mini Jeep Kids Course.

This year at Camp Jeep New York, Jeep will be celebrating the 500,000th test ride attendee. This marks a substantial milestone in the Chrysler Group's auto show ride-n-drive program. The 500,000th rider will receive an all expenses paid trip for his/her family to the national Camp Jeep this summer. Also, taking a test ride on the Jeep Trail Rated Course will help benefit local environmental efforts. Jeep has partnered with The Wildlife Conservatory of the Bronx to donate funds for ecological preservation.

Kicking off the springtime selling season, the 2007 New York International Auto Show will feature an impressive collection of cutting-edge design and remarkable innovation. More than four floors of displays from the world's automakers will feature the newest vehicles and futuristic concept cars. More than 1,000 cars and trucks will be on display at the Javits Center, filling 846,000 square feet of exhibit space. In addition, dozens of World and North American vehicle debuts are expected at the Show. NYIAS is owned and produced by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association.

So.... Anyone think the new KK Liberty will have the fuel mileage problem resolved? How about the weight issue?

My 3.7L KJ gets about 14mpg. It weighs over 4000 lbs. My 10-year-old old 4.0L XJ got about 19mpg. It weighed just over 3000 lbs.

Well, the KK should have or less then the MPG numbers of the Nitro. (Less due to the 4x4 system).

However, the numbers on the press release will look really bad because it will be a 2008 model, and all 08 models have more restrictive standards on the MPG numbers. (see 2008 Avenger relative to the 2007 Sebring).

Yeah, I'm thinking more along the lines of real world numbers. I know that the '08 stickers are closer to real-world than in the past, so that's good. Good point about comparing it to a Nitro. What kind of real-world mileage does a Nitro get, anyway?

My '06 KJ sticker said 17/22, but I really get more like 14/16. I drive like a grampa, too. Never over 2500rpm, never over 72 on the highway. 85% of my driving is 42mph on two-lane asphalt roads.

I don't know of any real MPG numbers for the Nitro. But I would head over to allpar (see the provided link) and ask the various Nitro owners there the same question.

The new Nitro is more Jeep Liberty than the other way around. If there wasn't a Liberty there would be no Nitro. It's just because the Nitro was introduced first people are going to think it's a rebadged Nitro. We all know better.

Not to mention that the Liberty will most likely have a completely different driveline setup as well as possibly a different engine.

True, but the general public isn't going to know as much. Since the Nitro debuted first, everyone is going think of the new Liberty as just a rebadged Nitro, and as such the street-bias of the Nitro is going to detract from the Liberty's perceived off-road capability. I've already seen comments along those lines on forums and blogs.

DCX should have been smart enough to know this and waited to release the Nitro *after* the new Liberty.

On the flip-side of all this, I've seen comments where people think the Nitro is built off the KJ platform, since they heard it shared its platform with the Liberty and they assume it's the current Liberty, since the new KK Liberty isn't out yet.

edit: I doubt we'll see a huge difference in the drivetrains btwn the Nitro and the new KK Liberty (probably because I see the Nitro as little more than a rebaged KK). The KK should certainly have some different options, at least as far as the 4WD system(s) go, but I think it would be a good guess that it'll have the same 4.0L V6 than the Nitro does, and the suspension/axles will probably be very similar if not the same.

I guess what is important for Liberty is how it is marketed. We do have to remember that only a small group or people know what car shares what with other cars. Most people don't even realize that the Grand Cherokee and Commander are off the same line and our basically the same underneath. Same the with Patriot, Compass and Calibar. Even the H3 and H2 are Chevy trucks underneath.

I think the Jeep's distintive styling will be a major drawing card for the Liberty, along with its off-road (hopefully) capabilities. IMO, most of the general public doesn't care/understand that the Liberty/Nitro are built off the same platform.

Has anyone seen any studies that shows how many buyers of the Caliber/Compass/Patriot know they are built off the same platform? My guess is that Jeep buyers are more in tune with such things than the buyer of the Caliber.
