CompassCompass Rallye Officially Announced
Posted by mike on 2007/5/3 16:06:01 (3784) reads

Despite the fact that you've been able to pre-order a Jeep Compass Rallye edition for quite some time now, Chrysler Group recently issued a press release officially announcing it.

The Mopar-branded body kit gives the smallest Jeep a more aggressive look with unique wheels and a rear spoiler for under $2,000. From the press release:

“The Rallye Package from Mopar enhances the sleek, sophisticated and expressive styling and appearance of the Jeep Compass,” said John Plecha, Director – Jeep Marketing and Global Communications. “It embellishes its modern Jeep appeal and gives the Compass a character all its own.”

The Jeep Compass Rallye Package – available in Black, Silver, Inferno Red, Jeep Green and Steel Blue – includes:

* Unique 18-inch x 7-inch black-painted aluminum wheels with machined edges and chrome center caps
* Roof-mounted rear spoiler that adds performance-oriented styling
* Auxiliary driving lights with covers that feature the Jeep logo
* Bright exhaust tips that reinforce the Compass’ forceful personality
* Chrome Rallye badge
* Mopar body kit featuring front and rear fascia overlay appliqués, lower honeycomb front fascia grille and side sill lower panels and door appliqués

The U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Jeep Compass Rallye Package is $1,985 (Sport) and $1,850 (Limited). Limited production began in April for the United States and international markets. Pre-orders are being taken now.

Kinda like a Corolla with a ground effects package … it would have been far more impressive to have made a sincere commitment to the Compass' identity with a 300 HP turbo and rally suspension. That would have been a statement! Instead chrome and tinsel prevails in a sad ploy to revitalize sales at the cost of further marginalizing this vehicle.

 Re: Compass Rallye Officially Announced
The Rallye front facia does help improve the looks of the Compass, but then that's not saying much (something about lipstick on a pig comes to mind). Interestingly it makes it look more like the concept car we were teased with.

I'm not surprised at all that it's merely an appearance package though. Jeep's target market for the Compass is girls/women (they've admitted this on several occasions), most of which [broad generalization]are more concerned with a car's looks than with its performance[/generalization]. Despite the rally-inspired styling of the concept and it's marketing images, when the real specs were released it became quite clear that Jeep was going after the Scion segment, not Suby.

IMHO DCX really should have left the 'car' segment to the Dodge Caliber which is far better styled and equipped to go up against the import crowd, and the rally crowd if they so-chose. But the Dodge brand as a whole has little appeal to the female market, and Chrysler wouldn't really appeal to younger buyers, so all that was left was Jeep and DCX just had to have a "chick car" off the Caliber platform...

OK, everybody just relax and take it down a notch. I'm about to open up the age-old argument that we've all heard before. You (we, whatever) are all hard-core Jeepers and enthusiasts, which make up exactly 0% of the target market for this vehicle. Keep in mind that the Compass was made (and to a lesser extent, the Patriot) to draw in NEW Jeep drivers, not keep existing ones. This is the same crowd that is looking at the Scion, Escape, CR-V, etc., and NOT the Subaru line. Anything that appears to draw on off-road heritage (whether it REALLY does or not) gives this otherwise questionable "Jeep" validity in a person's mind who has little to no experience with the brand and thinks that all Jeeps are just off-road trucks. These people have mostly, up to this point, questioned how the Compass fit into the Jeep lineup and therefore didn't want to buy one that wasn't a "true Jeep" for fear of looking like a poseur (which is suicide in this crowd). This kind of package, which is EXACTLY like the previous Sahara/Orvis/Overland/Pioneer/Country/Renegade (I could go on....) packages, has NOTHING to do with true off-road performance, obviously, but the "appearance" of such a thing.

Now, would an SRT variant of the Compass with a powerful engine and AWD really breathe some life into this car? Absolutely.

Also, I do agree that the Compass, and perhaps the Patriot, should have somehow incorperated the Eagle nameplate. Not only does it fit in with Jeep's current "national pride" nameline (Liberty, Patriot, etc.) but believe it or not the Eagle name still has a lot of equity with buyers, especially the parents of the kids that are now 16-19 and are looking at these entry vehicles for their kids. But alas, this did not happen, and won't (Jeep has more or less said that the Eagle name won't be used, and the last thing DCX needs to do right now is open another brand).

As long as Jeep continues to make the Wrangler (and a few other solid off-road performers), I really don't care too much about what else they put out, so long as these things SELL and keep the brand going.

I'll spot you that the bolt on fender flares on my KJ Renegade are for appearance only, but do you really think the roof-mounted off-road lights, the skid plates, and the rock rails don't serve any functional purpose? The vehicle's not a rock crawler by any means, but those items sure are useful for regular off-roading, namely driving on rutted, rocky, washed out fire roads with stream and log crossings. The Renegade package on the KJ offers form and function. This Rallye package on the Compass offers nothing but form.

Ahh, I stand corrected for the Renegade trim on the KJ. I was actually referring to the Renegade trim on the old YJs.

To all U skeptics: yuk it up while U can!

I agree with Josephus. Jeep should immediately introduce an SRT version of the Compass, similar to the 300HP SRT4 Caliber. They share the same platform (as does the Patriot) with the "new world" engine drivetrain. It's only a matter of time. With AWD & 300HP & these ground effects, the 20-somethings will be drooling, and the WRX will have a real challenger and a legit "Rallye car".

I just wish Jeep jumped in with both feet & offered the 300HP Compass right away, instead of "gauging" the public's reaction to a "special appearance package". Hopefully the snickers don't scare 'em away from proceeding with the next logical iteration.

They need an SRT version of this. I didn't buy a Mazdaspeed6 (AWD, 274hp) for just the looks...and an SRT package would get a few 30 somethings like me in there too.
At this point Jeep has strayed away from the off road ruggedness of some of its vehicles enough that there's really no turning back. The only way to keep these 'offshoots' from becoming the runts of the litter is to give them an SRT model to keep up with the Type S & R's,the Mazdaspeeds, SVTs and SSs out there. If this is intended to compete with the crossovers only then don't let one try to race my CX7 from a stop...you can only buy one with 244hp...
And just so no one thinks I'm a Mazda only person, I've owned and at times driven nothing but Jeeps (YJs, XJs, SJs, and my most recent CJ8) over the last 12 years and regretted selling every one of them.

 Re: Compass Rallye Officially Announced
I think this is kinda sad.
A Rallye version is supposed to be the embodiment of performance mated to All-Wheel drive. It would have been the sole justification for creating the Compass, and yet the bean counters still won't let the SRT group execute it correctly. It's a fancy trim package - that's all.
No Turbo or twin-chargers, no increased wheel travel, no performance bump = no interest. Leave the Rallye stuff to Suburu and Mitsubishi.
It's a shame, because with Jeep's established off-road prowess they could have easily parlaid that into Rallye cred.
Maybe the hanging tailgate speakers and flashlight will attract buyers.

YES! This is exactly what this car needed to distinguish itself from the Caliber and draw on off-road heritage (yes, yes I know that Jeep doesn't have the "heritage" in rallye that it does in off-roading, but its better than nothing!). What are the drivetrain choices? This thing would be sweet with a turbocharged 4 or 6 and AWD...

This is a cosmetic package, not an attempt at challenging the Subaru WRX.

This is exactly what the Compass doesn't need and underlines the notion that DCX doesn't really have a solid target for this car. There will be no boxer engine, race-ready AWD, nor turbocharging. This is a poseur package. A really expensive pile of plastic and paint.

What's really salt in the wound is that Jeep had a stablemate in Eagle that offered the precursor to the Subaru "heritage" and it is a target niche that the brand might fit into very well. The Compass isn't the answer to this, however. It's a cynical grab for a low-priced Scion demographic.

I have no doubt that the Patriot will fit in where the Liberty currently resides but the Compass is completely lost. This stinks of desperation and is looking more like the Aztec with every piece of 3M double-sided tape applied to it.

I had to check around to make sure this wasn't a joke. This is hilarious. I laughed out loud and woke someone up who was sleeping nearby.

How do 18" wheels and ground effects draw on an off road heritage? You don't know what the hell you are talking about. Period.

People got paid money to think up and make something that is uglier than an Aztec and possibly more useless given that the Aztec wasn't supposed to be a baby Hummer.

They blew a chance to create a domestic Subaru and make something that had some engineering and genuine coolness behind the PR spin. But this is so stratospherically pathetic. A glue on the body panels GM bullsh!t all tacky flash not an ounce, no not a single molecule, of smart style or performance or value.

Worse than an Aztec!!! This is an amazing feat that will go unequaled for awhile I hope. Unless they are shooting for worse thatn a Pacer for the next redesign.

Let me add this info as well. I am a rally nut. I attend stage rallys when I can and I go to rallycrosses a couple times a month.

I would love for them to go after Subaru. Even if it were just a glancing blow. I would love the whole turn a Jeep into a M-F grocery getter S-S max attack rally mobile.

This is just stupid. No one with two neurons firing off that has any affinity for rally would take this thing seriously. If I took my laptop to a rallycross and showed people this they would destroy their optical nerves from rolling their eyes so severely.

Poseur with a 20' capitol P.

Aztec ?
Geeezsh! I don't think I hate it THAT much - to call it worse than the Aztec is a bit too harsh IMHO.
Well at least someone who really is into the Rallye scene recognizes that this Compass version has fallen short of it's capabilities.

3M double-schtik tape . . . You guys crack me up!
