WranglerProduction Jeep Pickup Spied?

Autoblog just posted a bunch of photos from KGP Photography showing what appears to be a test vehicle for the long-wished-for Jeep pickup. From the accompanying text:

We got up-close and personal with what appears to be a mule for a Wrangler-based pickup truck, right along the lines of the Jeep JT truck concept. The rear doors of a four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited have been welded shut, and the black composite roof structure has been extended forward to the B-pillar. The roll-down side glass has been replaced with a solid window.

Check out the full story and photos.

UPDATE: 8/19/07 - Looks like this may not be the JT after all - rather a military Jeep being built for Egypt. See the article over at LeftLaneNews.

And while we are on hte subject, why not take a Wrangler Unlimited 4 door, close off the rear to make a cargo box, and move the pickup top over the rear seats, and make a WRANGLER SUT???

Just a thought...

Again, though, the key to success will be minimal variations off the base product, but maximim variety in the final product (if t hat makes any sense)

I'm skeptical about this but it's certainly intriguing.

I think that after the Gladiator concept and the recent JT concept there's a Jeep pickup on the horizon. If nothing else, it shows that perhaps (just perhaps) they are listening. All those Unlimiteds they've been selling might have made them more open minded about expanding on the Wrangler platform.

I liked the extra space behind the driver & passenger seats in the Gladiator but if they make the JT, I'll be okay with that. I can just slap the spare on the side myself. My XJ's lonely and needs another Jeep to keep it company. A pickup would be a good match...

Yes, I am aware that leaf springs are much more efficient at carrying heavier loads, or they wouldn't still be around...

But, what kind of vehicle are we lobbying for here?

Jeep Gladiator???
Jeep JT/Brute???
Postal Jeep Pickup???
Scrambler???

My vote goes for the JT/Brute, or a scrambler-type vehicle the same length as the Unlimited w/ 4wheel coils, the Gladiator uses coils, but is way too long...

I don't have anything against Leafs for a street or a light duty PU, but I would want something that is as (or nearly) as capable as the Unlimited, so coils with airbag supplements arent such a bad deal...

Again, Leafs could be made to work offroad to the same level as the coils (with spherical busings) but at a sacrifice to ride quality (although we're back to the good ol' axle flip for rear lift)...

Given the choice of the four, my personal vote goes to the JT/Brute type pickup...with the pickup bed serving double duty as a rear seat area, and/or cargo box...

We won't be hauling 4'x8's or tons of bricks in that puny bed anyway, so why fret about switching to leafs, and with a rear swinging tailgate, 2"x4"x8's arent looking all that good either...

Tents, duffel bags, repelling rope, dogs, folding chairs, BBQ's, bean bag games., beer coolers, mountain bikes, stuff that gets tossed in and yanked out, thats what's going in the back of that truck, so let it be what it is, a cargo box.

This all seems so wasteful to me. They have already developed the perfect truck. Just build the Gladiator !!! Somehow I know they wont build it, and Hummer will and they are gonna get scooped gain. And I'll be willing to bet that the Hummer Pu will look amazingly like the Gladiator - and they will sell TONS of 'em !!

I agree with your sentiments on Jeep building the Gladiator.

The H3T is just going to be a Hummer H3 with a bed on the back though, nothing spectacular. It'll definitely sell better than Jeep's truck though... oh wait, Jeep doesn't have a truck, haha (or, not haha).

These are nothing more than 'mules' for the military trucks that Jeep builds for the Egyptian military. These things first surfaced back in February of this year.

The leaf springs and Dana60 rear axle, yes, DANA 60, are because these trucks often are used as gun platforms or troop transports, so they need the HD rear suspension and axle.

Unfortunately they are NOT anything we're going to get here in the US.

Yes, the mules for the Egyptian military were essentially the same EXCEPT weren't they left hand drive? I believe Egypt drives on the right side of the road like here in the US so they wouldn't use a right hand drive vehicle.

These could be for another country's military.

I wouldn't say we weren't going to get it in the US... I would easily see it being here for a Postal vehicle.

Hmm, you got me there on the LHD vs RHD, but if they were going to make a postal JK, they'd just take a regular JK Unlimited and make it RHD just like they did on the postal XJs and TJs -- no leafs and no 1-ton Dana60 rear axle like these mil-spec trucks have.

I hope it's only for the "postal market", because I like the lookof the JT Concept better than this test mule, and why go back to Leaf Springs, unless they are going to use 'Orbit Eyes' spherical leaf bushings (Johnny Joints for leafs), but even still, I would prefer a coil spring suspension, just add airbags to the coils and be done with it.

I'd like a pickup, but with kids I need 4 seats, so add rear seats and a remoavable/foldable rear center section. Face them backwards and you have the Rubicon BRAT!!!

Why leaf springs? Because leaf springs handle payload much better... that is why you will see most heavy duty pickups use leaf springs.

Coil springs are a joke when it comes to heavy loads.

This could be a postal vehicle as Jeep did have a RHD version of the TJ for those customers. It is a market Jeep has long been involved in and an easy one to deal with because it takes very little engineering (taking a UK-spec Wrangler as the starting base). I am glad to see them sticking with it.

I hardly would call this a PICKUP though... it is a LWB 2-door Wrangler.

I'm hoping this is true and I'd like to see a jeep pickup, but I'm I off thinking that this is somebody's modified jeep and not something done by those at Chrysler?

Look at the third picture. There are two other Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds. One of them is towing a trailer. This is likely the trailer that was used to haul this modified pickup. Do you still think this is someone's modified Jeep?

"UPDATE: Mike Levine at Pickuptruck.com speculates that Jeep may be going after the postal fleet market. These mules are right-hand drive (to reach mailboxes perhaps?) and leaf springs (to handle the heavy load of mail maybe?)"

Are they joking? Here's whose going after the "lucrative" postal fleet market. No one.

A ute for the Aussies maybe.

I doubt some random dude is just casually driving around with all that data logging stuff in the back.
