Edmunds Inside Line does this cool thing where they do long-term test drives with vehicles and they blog about their experiences as they go along. I've been following their 2007 Wrangler experiences and just learned about the ability for the navigation system to record trails. Has anyone tried this? Can you output a GPX file or something similar to post online?

And a nifty thing I discovered about our Wrangler? You can record trails you go on! I was playing with the nav system and saw that it gave me the option to record a trail. You can save it, expand on the trail or discard it. How cool is that?
Check out latest blog entry or check out all the posts. They've also been testing the Compass and the Commander - although the Commander's tested came to a crashing end earlier this year.

This is nothing new and Edmunds should know this.

Chrysler Factory navigation systems have always had trail mapping capability.

The RB1 I had in my 2003 Liberty could do this and I used it many times to find my way back out of logging areas in Maine.

Export would be nice and the new systems have that potential. Whether it is activated or not is another question.

mapping and recording trails is a great thing, especially if you can export it out onto something. Myonly concern about this is the person that may exploit it. Many of us wheel on private land, and as we know one bad egg can spoil the soup (ore something like that)

Our club maps the trails that we use (wich is mainly private foresting company lands) We've provided the data to the forestry company as well as local search and rescue teams.
