SalesRumor: Jeep Dealerships to be Limited to Only Jeeps and SUVs?

Are changes headed for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep dealerships? From The Wall Street Journal:

Chrysler LLC, looking to return to profitability by 2009, is considering branding changes that would further simplify its product portfolio while helping to cut as many as 1,000 dealers.

A plan now being discussed calls for Chrysler dealers to sell all of the auto maker's passenger cars under the Chrysler name. Dodge dealers would exclusively offer pickup and commercial trucks, while Jeep dealers would sell Jeep and sport-utility vehicles, according to three dealers familiar with the discussions.
The article stresses that this is only one of the plans they are looking into.

For me this is TERRIBLE! In Cedar City, UT there are 2 dealerships that sell Jeeps. Oddly enough they are the Ford dealer and the GMC dealer. The Dodge dealer doesn't. Now I have to drive 50+ miles for dealer only parts?

"Chrysler Challenger". Sorry, that's not gonna fly.

Back in the AMC days, there were many Jeep only dealerships, all mom & pop low volume. Then there was AMC/Jeep/Renault followed by Chrysler/Plymouth/ Jeep/Eagle. Renault fought hard to get rid of all the single line dealers.

What's next? A shiny new 2010 Plymouth Cherokee?

Not a bad idea...

I can certainly live without the Dodge Durango/Chrysler Aspen, and I wouldn't lose any sleep with the 300, Charger, Challenger (upcoming) Magnum (due to be cut, but is sold as the 300 touring sedan in Europe with a turbo diesel) all being called a 'Chrysler'.

That would leave JEEP with the Wranglers and the Liberty, a redesigned Commander could be offered to replace the Durnago/Aspen, and then be offered in several trim levels from hardcore offroad to fru-fru luxo-trucks.

That would leave the Cherokee to be redesigned, possibly as the Trailhawk, or just a short version of the Commander.

The JT pickup would probably be the lone exception to pickups being sold under the Dodge name, but I am guessing it will have some sort of removable or fold and tumble center divider making it a 4-5 seater anyway (Raise the divider and fold down the seat for a pickup bed, raise the seat and lay the divider flat for a passenger area).

I am also theorizing that there would be an SRT 'boutique' shop within the Chrysler fold to sell orphans such as the Cherokee SRT, the Ram SRTand the Nitro (drop the base models and keep the R/T and make an SRT).

Finally Chrysler would probably also sell Crossover SUV's to replace the Pacifica.

Just my guess....

This story has already been denied by Chrysler.

Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Durango, Dodge Nitro, Dodge Journey? Who needs them?
Move the Commander up to the Durango platform. Drop the Compass. What does that give you?
A (really) Full-Size Commander.
A mid-size hardbody Grand Cherokee.
The removable top mid & compact sized Wranglers.
The hardbody compact Liberty.
The sub-compact Patriot.

Definitely integrate the awesome Dodge (rebranded from Cummins) and Mercedes diesels in to the Heavier hitters (Wrangler & Up).

Leave the 'All-Wheel-Drive' vehicles to Chrysler.

A compact, hard body Liberty? Unless you are talking about another Liberty redesign, there is no compact Liberty. Have you seen one of the new ones? In comparison with an XJ, it's huge. More the size of the WJ. I wish Jeep would think about us still-disinfranchised XJ owners. The models of the Jeep line just grow larger each year.
