PatriotBritish Magazine Names Patriot 4X4 of the Year

The all-new Jeep Patriot has been named the 4X4 of the Year by the British magazine "4X4 and MPV Driver".

The Patriot has been attracting customers from competitor brands such as Land Rover, Nissan and Honda, since its launch in the UK in June this year. With nearly 800 sales to date, the Patriot appeals to customers that want a vehicle that is capable on- and off-road but who also want the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a family hatchback.

Commenting on the award which was announced in the December edition of the magazine, Bob Murray, Editor of 4×4 and MPV Driver, said: “The Jeep Patriot is quicker than the Land Rover Freelander 2, more able off-road than the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV 4, pumps out less CO2 than the Nissan X-Trail and has a boot around the size of the VW Tiguan’s.

“The Patriot is a cracking car to drive and promises to be a decent ownership proposition. It adds a welcome dash of adventure and US style to a sometimes bland SUV market. At last you can have your American pie …. and eat it, too!”

The publication recently awarded the Jeep brand the Gold Award in its Green 4×4 awards ahead of all other manufacturers of 4×4s and SUVs. They praised the Patriot as being the most economical 4×4 ever to wear the Jeep badge and the least polluting with their low CO2 emissions compared to manufacturers with smaller vehicles.

I agree with that assessment of the new Liberty. The Liberty looks like what could have been a natural progression of the styling on the XJ. The Patriot just looks like a vehicle that has some XJ styling cues.

The success of the Patriot with the Brits is just another reminder of how good the XJ was as a capable 4x4 in the European Market. The Liberty never really caught on over there even though it was badged as a CHEROKEE in Europe. The Patriot has the look of the XJ and feeds off the greatness of the XJ for much of its appeal. Long live the XJ.

I would argue that the new 08 Liberty is more 'XJ' than the MK. The new Lib is what the XJ should have grown into--if they were going to change it at all.

If I'd been riding around in Land Mowers for the last few decades, I'd probably think the Patriot was a step up.

I just haven't been impressed with the vehicle. Sure, it's got Cherokee styling cues but doesn't seem to be half the vehicle my XJ is. But perhaps I'm wrong about that, if this award is any indication. JP Magazine's review of it wasn't all that positive, even if it was done my a little twerp who drives a Civic hatchback or somesuch.

The concept versions of the Patriot seem to have some teeth. Like the one here at automobilemag.com But the one I keep seeing wheeling around on the streets?

Well, this is just a surprise...

So where is OUR 2.0 CRD? I could go for 43 MPG.

Not to beat a dead horse with the whole Plug in Hybrid Thing, but I saw an article in the Auto Section which showed 3 concepts from Chrysler, the Renegade being only one of them,,,,

The other two were a Fuel cell Microvan, and a High mileage Internal Combustion engined car....

I poked, prodded, and test-drove a moderately equipped Patriot with an automatic, initially enthusiastic that it could serve as a replacement for our family Subaru Forester. While I'm still pleased with the outward appearance of the vehicle, I thought the interior felt cramped, cheap - and it really required some persuasion to get it to move. It was really a disappointingly boring car. Although I would still love to try one of the premium models with the off-road options.

while I haven't been 'in' a Patriot yet, I got the same 'cramped' impression looking into one through the window. Considering the dang thing is as big if not bigger than an XJ on the outside, it's really sad that the interior isn't equally as 'spacious' (not that I'd really consider an XJ spacious in the grand scheme of things, but compared to the SUV/CUVs of similar exterior proportions, it is)...
