LibertyLiberty and Patriot Nominated for Truck of the Year
Posted by mike on 2007/12/13 16:51:00 (2701) reads

The nominations for the North American Truck of the Year were announced yesterday, and both the Jeep Liberty and the Jeep Patriot were among the nominees.

The awards are unique in the United States because -- instead of being given by a single publication, radio or television station -- they are given by 46 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The jurors represent outlets such as the MSN Autos, the Toronto Star, Car and Driver magazine, AutoWeek, The Chicago Tribune, MotorWeek, USA Today, Autoline Detroit, Edmunds.com, Road & Track magazine, the San Jose Mercury News, Consumer Guide, the Boston Globe, Automotive News and Fortune.

The awards are designed to recognize the most outstanding vehicles of the year based on factors that include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.

To be eligible, vehicles must be "all new" or "substantially changed" from the previous model.

The winners will be announced on January 13, at the North American International Auto Show.

The complete list of nominees is as follows:

Buick Enclave
Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid
Hyundai Veracruz
Jeep Liberty
Jeep Patriot
Kia Rondo
Land Rover LR2
Mazda CX-9
Nissan Rogue
Saturn Vue
Toyota Highlander/Hybrid
Toyota Tundra
Volvo XC70

Obviosly we have forgotten what a "TRUCK" really is supposed to be. I can't imagine what a 3/4 ton Kia Rondo would look like. Some interesting vehicles on the list but only one real truck. Sad to see the dilution of an Award that at one time was an honor to win for the real trucks on the market. I say if there are no legitimate contenders, so be it, then no award.

What? It's so good they had to redesign it? Yeah, that's a great criteria. I guess the Cherokee never won too many of these things.

Exactly.

I remember back in grade school we had Student of the Year and Most Improved. This one falls under the latter. Not to mention calling some of these vehicles "trucks" is just blasphemous.

F-150s and Dodge Rams in junkyards everywhere are rolling over in their graves...

Now that's funny. There's only one bonafied truck on that list (maybe two).

I hear ya. And because of that, Tundra FTW. It's a nice looking truck, even if it's overpriced and has a junky interior. But mainly because it's the only truck on the list.

Used to be only trucks were called trucks. Nowadays marketing dubs a vehicle as a certain type and suddenly everyone's like, "OK. It's a truck!" Case in point: Subaru are now touting the Outback as a "mid-sized SUV." Huh? It's an AWD station wagon. Remember, "the world's first sport utility wagon?" (Which, incidentally, wasn't even true because the AMC Eagle Wagon had it beat by over 10 years.) It's just an imprezza wagon with AWD. Lame. Then there's Suzuki selling the SX4 as a "crossover?" You serious, Clark? It's a chinsey hatchback car with AWD. Might as well sell the VW Golf R32 as a "crossover," because didn't it have AWD? I'm surprised these two Japanese princesses aren't on this list just because some marketer said, "Hey! They're SUVs! That means they're trucks!"
