Posted by mike on 2007/12/19 13:05:00 (4321) reads recently pitted a Jeep Wrangler (CRD Sahara) against a Land Rover Defender 90 and a Hummer H3 in an off-road test that involved water and a lot of mud.

How do you sort the men from the boys in a proper 4x4 test? Easy; all you need is three of the most serious offroaders on sale in the UK, a muddy slope and a heavy right foot. And if you’ve got a video camera on hand, it turns out, you can make a fine video while you’re at it.

Autocar’s “King off the road” triple test, in this week’s Christmas double issue, asks a big question: given that us Brits can now buy a new, right-hand drive Hummer and an improved Jeep Wrangler, is the Land Rover Defender still the best go-anywhere mud-plugger on the market?

Get this week’s magazine if you want to read our answer to that question, or if you’d rather watch it – particularly if you like the idea of seeing a two-tonne Hummer with three wheels off the ground

The video is a bit choppy, but it is really well done and fun to watch although it does seem that the testing methodology and scoring was a bit more subjective than usual vehicle testing standards. Check it out.

THANK YOU!! That was thoroughly enjoyable & FUNNY! LOL!! Did he say some "knobber" driving an H3 in downton London? That was hysterical.

Of course, we all know that MTR's would have driven the JK up the hill equally well, so no sense in getting upset with the results.

What I'm more interested in is the Land Rover's attempt to reintroduce Defenders to the U.S. --which was supposed to be in 2008. I haven't heard or read a peep since that rumor 2 years ago... Any new news on that front??

This segment sponsored by Rover of England...
wow, several minutes of my life I will never get back, wasted on a bunch of nobs who have no interest in really testing anything, with even less knowlege of off road driving. Looked more like a poor YouTube video made by a bunch of guys after a few too many pints at the pub...I kinda took offence at the fact that you need to "look like a farm hand" to drive off road...I would like to invite these guys over here for a week and show them what real off roading is...Did like the shot of the yoof in the hat showing off his shiny Defender parked way over in the distance so as not to get it muddy. poser.

Why would Autocar have someone who doesn't care about 4x4s do the test?

I understand to idea of running them all on stock rubber, but you could atleast have them all start at the same point to try and get up the hill.

I would be a bit scared in the hummer when it jumped to three wheels.

At first the intro for this article looked promising, as soon as I read the details I knew it was a rig.
An equalized test would include all 3 rolling on matching make/model tires & their various stock size tires. Along with same body style (4-door vs. 2-door isn't fair either).
The sod who was judging had a 4-door Defender sitting there, how come he didn't run it?
I understand this was a backyard comparison, but to have the endorsement of Autocar is not just a backyard operation.
For a couple of grand in rubber they could have had a legitimate comparison in the same manner.
I also understand this was the UK, where the Rubicon model is not available, but we all know how that would have turned out.

They should have them all start from the same spot.

But yes, the stock tires on a non-Rubicon JK are worthless in the mud. I took my friend's JK Unlimited X with the upgraded wheel package through the mud and it handled like crap. When her JK's tires give out down the road I will probably find some Rubicon wheel and tires for her.

The same was true with the stock tires on my Cherokee. Of course, now I run Wrangler SilentArmor tires on both the Cherokee and the Commander. They handle snow, mud, rain-slicked roads, dry highways, dirt trails, and red rock (sandstone) with no hesitation.

Re: Video: Jeep vs. Hummer vs. Land Rover
Basically, they took a stock Defender, Sahara Unlimited and H3 to a muddy field and pointed them up the hill.

The Jeep went first on normal All-Season tires and nearly made it all the way up.

The Defender started from approximately the same place with approximately the same All-season tires and barely made it a quarter of the way. They tried again with a longer run-up and the Defender made it to the top.

The H3 made it to the top with a short run-up and all-terrain Goodyear Wrangler tires.

Both the presenter and the driver declared the Defender to be the winner. Of the two that made it to the top, they would be embarrassed to drive the Hummer. Therefore, even though the test was horribly unequal in pretty much every way that matters, the Defender was authoritatively declared the winner by a clearly biased host.

Still a decent waste of a few minutes to watch it.
