The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee were listed as the fourth most frequently stolen vehicle by the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Here's a snippet of the story as it appeared on Yahoo News:

The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are the most frequently stolen cars in the United States but pickup trucks, minivans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) have also become hot targets, according to a study released on Monday.

``The study confirms an increase in theft of pickups, vans and SUVs on a national basis,'' said Ed Sparkman of the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which released the report.

``Vehicle thieves follow market trends and target the most popular vehicles because they provide the best market for stolen vehicle parts,'' he added. The insurance industry-supported group listed the top 10 most stolen vehicles in 1998 as: Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet full-size pickup, Jeep full-size SUV (Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee), Honda Civic, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Ford full-size pickup, Ford Mustang, Dodge Caravan and Toyota Corolla.

For more information, you can visit the National Insurance Crime Bureau web site where you can check out a list of the most commonly stolen vehicles in a number of major metropolitan areas (Jeeps are second in Tuscon!).
