Concept/DemonstrationJeep Renegade Concept Debuts in Detroit
Posted by mike on 2008/1/14 7:45:47 (2164) reads

The Jeep Renegade concept vehicle will debut in Detroit this week at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

LeftLaneNews.com is reporting that:

Driving range is extended by a generator coupled to a small-displacement 1.5-liter Bluetec diesel engine. Renegade has a 400-mile range, and is capable of achieving an equivalent gasoline fuel economy rating of 110 miles per gallon.

While most electric vehicles are geared toward commuting around town, the Jeep Renegade is specifically designed for off-road performance. "With an electric motor powering each axle, the Jeep Renegade concept is designed for a ‘hang on and have fun experience," said Tony Shamenkov, Jeep Renegade concept principal exterior designer.

What happened between the concept art and the actual concept car? The styling took a dive somewhere in between.

And I really liked the Halo look of the concept sketch.

My Cherokee normally resides in the garage while I drive my Suzuki Swift commute car that gets 40 mpg. Even if the fuel mileage were the same this looks like way more fun to drive, and with some sort of 4WD to boot . I like the idea of an electric motor on each wheel from one poster. Then we could push a button for off road lift with no pumpkin to bash. Jeep needs to come up with fuel efficient vehicles if they want to stay in business. And an electric motor has 100% torque at startup, so starting out in boulders on a steep hill would be easy. I say smooth out the lines a little to appeal to more than 17 to 20 year olds (I'm 59, so don't forget the new middle agers), make a fold down windshield, room for camping gear (absolutely mandatory!!), push button lift, low range, keep the 110 MPG and they'd have a winner. Throw in a boat propellor and they could not keep em on the shelf.

In all Seriousness, a single vehicle that can get 110 mpg is great, but Chrysler's environmental efforts would be better served by equipping ALL of their vehicles with...

1. Basic Start-Stop Hybrid system which shuts the engine when the vehicle is not moving, and starts it when the car begins to move.

2. Do away with the conventional automatic transmission as we know it, and replace it with either a CVT and a battery pack(in small cars) and the Hybrid Hydraulic Transmission, which can recouperate more kinetic energy than a battery setup, in trucks and higher horsepower applications.

3. Add the Hydraulic Launch Assist to any manual-transmission-equipped vehicle, to recoup kinetic energy.

A Hybrid Hydraulic Transmission-Equipped EPA test vehicle averaged between 35 and 45 M.P.G. with better performance than the Auto-trans.

I would still like to see a Willys-type hybrid built, but the overall effect of an ENTIRE fleet saving between 15 and 35 % gallons of fuel would out-weigh the effect of a single high-mileage model.

Oh Gag! That thing is nauseous, looking at it is more effective than taking a swig of syrup of ipecac.

The notion of a diesel hybrid is just fine, but put it in a light weight Wrangler type rig. Not this Suzuki X90 wannabe.

Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Raaacer Go-ooooo!!!

Yeah, it's ugly, Yeah, it's unconventional, Yeah, it's a 2 seat concept, but at least it's not a Compass...

The layout looks like a front/rear rehash of the TTR (Through The Road) concept, with a completely (I hope) disconnected gen-set.

The concept is solid, charge it at night, commute on electricity, and use gas for extended trips.

I AGAIN call for the Jeep Willy's concept to be built with the Blu-tec Diesel genset, hub-mounted PML motors, and battery-only capability, seating for 4/5, Rubicon-Capable.

And another thing, mount those goofy underwater fans on the underside and make it Amphibious...(Am I asking for too much here???)

ummm..what happened at the jeep plant to make that?

i dont get it, willys, kaiser, AMC could design jeeps. people at chrsyler think that putting the word jeep and adding a cj style grill on a vehicle makes it a jeep. i'd defintely rather have my old full size cherokee chief or a j10 than a car that says jeep.

I like the idea of a diesel hybrid Jeep, but I don't like the look of this concept. For a Jeep, it needs harder lines and more of a utilitarian, brutish look. But that is just my opinion anyway.

I have to agree with what someone else voiced. It looks like Jeep is trying to be something it is not by trying to broaden its brand appeal.

Let's not be so hasty.

Call it ugly if you want, but if I had the choice between this or a Compass in Jeep's lineup, you better believe I'd rather have this.

Also, it's not such a horrible notion, in theory. This is a two-seating roadster that can go off-road. It's not a bad idea, at all.

The question is, does Jeep have any business making a vehicle like this? I think so. Now, would I buy it, myself? No. Do I think it's a better looking vehicle that's targeted at a better market than the Compass? Yes.

Yeah, it's sportier than a Wrangler and it looks like a 'Vette with a lift and it looks like it deserves a spoiler instead of a spare on the back(and spoilers do not belong on Jeeps) but if building a Jeep like this means higher sales (it'll sell more than the Compass or the Patriot, I'm sure) and more money to go ahead with an ORT program and build bigger, smaller, better Jeeps, then I'm all for it.

Honestly, I kinda like the way it looks though I'm not entirely sold on the name...

::cough::

ok, I give up..what are the things in/on the back deck? theu look like underwater propulsion units used by scuba divers...I must say the design might grow on me, not the hybrid stuff, will be a long time before I am sold on that. But AFTER I get my JT, I might look at something like this in standard gas powered version for the Mrs..No diesel for me...don't feel like having to defrost my fuel before I can use it.

Is this a joke?
Seems Jeep got where it is by being true to its roots. Now it wants to be all things to all people. This thing is nothing to anyone.
Will somebody put this ship back on course before it runs aground?

Looking carefully at the photo, is that a SPOILER I see on the back... of a JEEP?? I wonder if spinners and curb feelers will be optional...

Well, i'm not sure, but I guess it could grow on me if it had full doors and a top. Kind of like the Jeepster concept.

The real qestion is how much of the Concept technology will be implemented into a new vehicle?

Sweet would be the electric with the diesel generator. give me one motor per wheel, so i don't need to add lockers.

With all the hoopla around hybrid cars and CAFE standards, having something similar to this may allow us to get a torquey V8 in the JKs or heaven forbid a diesel.

It's a concept, it's supposed to be ugly....but kind of reminds me of Speed Buggy.

OK, who asked for a Jeep that looks like a 70's era Corvette? I know I didn't. What did I, the Jeep buying conumer ask for?

For over a dozen years I and others like me have asked Jeep for a Diesel Wrangler, and yet they give us this junk. Instead of listening to their customers, they hired sports car enthusiasts to guide their future.

When they compare this vehicle to others "in its class", I suppose they'll be comparing it to the Rav4 and offerings by Kia, Saturn, and Scion. Face it, that's where the legendary Jeep name is headed. No wonder the Hummer guys are introducing a Wrangler clone - someone's got to pick up the slack.

If you haven't guessed, this new direction makes me sick.

Holy crap that's ugly. It must've lost something in translation from a sketch to the real thing because there's almost no definition between the hood, the fender, and the front end. Jeep, stay away from making cars. Let Dodge make the cars and you make the trucks, k? There's alot to be said for this using electric motors and diesel engines. Why must diesel remain in the concept world for most of Jeep?

Well, fantasy aside... this has some styling cues that might have made the Compass a bit more palatable.
I like the "edgier" looks of the previous Willys & Willys2 concepts better. Either way, I think there's room in the Jeep lineup for a stripper dune buggy type vehicle --just chop & morph the existing Compass into something interesting & it could be a hit... at $15K...
