Commander2009 Last Model Year for the Commander
Posted by jeepxk on 2008/4/15 7:59:15 (2828) reads has an unofficial report of what we are all expecting - that the Commander is not long for this world:

Chrysler will drop the slow-selling Jeep Commander in mid-2009. Thatís the word from insiders who asked not to be named because the decision has not been officially announced. The cancellation is blamed on high gas prices and changing consumer buying patterns which have significantly reduced demand for large SUVs.

Introduced in 2005, Commander sales hit a peak of 88,497 in 2006, its first full year on the market, but dropped to 63,027 units last year. At the pace set in the first quarter of 2008, annual sales are forecast to be about 36,000 units.

The Commander was a great idea produced 5 or 6 years too late. I liked looking at it more than the GC, I always felt it looked more like a Jeep.

I'll be glad to see a GC with a Commander-ish facelift. Since they're dropping the Commander and (here's hoping) the Compass that could open up room for... oh, I dunno... a Jeep pickup and a compact off-roader, perhaps?? (I'm of the opinion that even Jeepers need options and it wouldn't cannibalize 2-door Wrangler sales)

I'm not holding my breath though...

When trading in my 06 for an 07 was cheaper than lemoning the 06, I knew the Commander was in trouble. I love the thing but I'm don't exactly embody the typical buyer. We wanted something not too large with 3 rows and torque and that could tow. We also LOVE boxy. The last family truckster was a Jeep Cherokee (not Grand). There's also the slight reliability issue. Our 07 has so far been rock solid but our 06 far from the first one off the assembly line (was a mid year 65th Anniversary edition) and it still had tons of problems.

I'm glad we got ours and plan to keep it for a long time. It's too bad few other people were interested.

Too bad, we love our Commander, and were hoping to trade in for a Diesel Commander, but I guess that isn't going to happen...

Commander really hit it off big, but they (Chrysler) are right, buying habits, consumer preferences, and gas prices are going to kill off the Commander...

Personally, I'd like to see Commander become the new nameplate, It's bold, more functional, and, well Commanding...

Die, Cherokee, Die!!!! Long Live the Commander!!!!

I do agree, removing a top-end model makes room for an entry level vehicle...mabye they can name it "SCOUT" since Jeep owns the IH Scout name...

Quite possibly a 2 door, 5 seat Hybrid with a Renegade-type Drivetrain? The Jeep people would be fools to pass this one up, but, then again....

Jeep Scrambler concept, Dakar concept, Willys concept..need I go on??? All concepts that Jeep missed out on- I hope they don't miss the boat on this one---The Renegade was U-G-L-Y but the concept was SWEET.

Actually I am surprised that it is taking the "New Chrysler" so long to make some of the changes they promised. I realize they have some parts to use up but surely they can kill both the Commander and Nitro sooner than they obviously are planning. Every Nitro is one less Jeep Liberty sold and one more marketing dollar wasted. I am looking forward to Chrysler killing some of the senseless duplicate models they have in the lineup and get serious about being competitive in the marketplace and having two models such as the Nitro and Liberty (when the Nitro is just a poor clone of a Jeep) is a waste of precious marketing resources and Jeep needs a Real 7 passenger vehicle, and while I like the styling of the Commander vs. the GC, the Commander is not the answer.

The 2009 model year, even if it's the Commander's last ... will offer some good upgrades including an upgraded HEMI engine that produces around 370hp and 400lb/ft but has at least a 5% increase in fuel economy. Also coming are an upgraded MyGig system with full iPod support and self-leveling HID lighting.

Funny thing is it's not significantly bigger than the Grand Cherokee. On the exterior it's only just a bit taller and has a bit longer of a rear overhang to fit that 3rd row "seat". Heck, there's more of a difference in size between the Nitro and Liberty than there is between the Commander and Grand Cherokee. Fuel economy is virtually the same btwn the GC and Commander. I bet they'd see some sales increase if they offered the 3.0L CRD in the Commander like they are the GC.

I really think what we'll see is that when the Grand Cherokee gets redesigned along with the Durango and Aspenifica, it'll get a slight upsize along with an optional 3rd row seat, and probably a slightly boxier design. I really think the next gen GC will be an amalgam of the current GC and the Commander. Considering that even the Rav-freakin'-4 has 3 rows of seating now, I really don't see how Jeep could not offer a 7-seater SUV.

As a GC owner who does NOT want a BIGGER boxier GC I suppose I am in the minority... If the GC turns into the nissan armada of jeep then I will not be happy... Has anyone given any thought to the customers jeep will lose that do not want a bigger Jeep GC vs the # gained by a 7 seat GC? I think not. Sadly I think my fears will come true and the GC will be ruined. JMHO

Surprise! I guess it was only a matter of time for the Commander. I wonder if it will be replaced in the Jeep lineup with something else or if Jeep will just have one less in the lineup.

Inevitable, I guess...

What next? Could that plant capacity be switched to JTs, or would Jeep have to build JTs directly alongside of JKs? Hmmmmm...

I smell something in the works...
