SalesApril Jeep Sales Down 13%
Posted by mike on 2008/5/2 7:42:57 (2496) reads

No big surprise here, but Jeep sales declined 13% in April. Sales were down across the board for all models except the Patriot - which was up over 300% compared to April, 2007. Don't be too impressed though, as Patriots production and sales were still ramping up this time last year.

The rest of the Jeep lineup all had double-digit declines, led by the Commander, whose sales dropped 44% compared to 2007.

In the official press release, Chrysler is touting its fuel-efficient cars' sales increases:

Chrysler's lineup of compact vehicles continued to connect well with consumers this month. Total compact vehicle sales of the fuel-efficient Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot, which each achieve 28 miles per gallon or better in highway driving, reached an April record 17,977 units last month, up 16 percent from April 2007.

Its no suprise that Patriot sales are up...im seeing more of them on the road than ever before and they are a good deal for a small SUV with descent gas milage and priced at a discount compared to competing products...the upgrade radio is one of the best ive ever heard in a vehicle....worth the $400 imo....

I have to agree that the XK needs to be retired. However, I think the Grand could use a stretching of about 5-6 inches so that there's a bit more leg room without sacrificing cargo capacity for it. But by no means should it become a Commander replacement. Let the Durango be the three row seat Chrysler product and keep the Grand true to it's roots.

Exactly why they should keep GC at its current size
This is why they should keep the GC at its current size and NOT turn it into a commander replacement. I know alot of vocal commander fans here will disagree, but somebody has to speak the truth! Make the GC into a boxier commanderish vehicle with 3 rows of seating and sales will go down. I guarantee it.

I have to say we are sold out of Jeep patriots and the unsellable compass!!!! Wranglers are still doing very well and the new liberty is moving wel off the lot. Amazingly people are still buying grand cherokees, the new 2008 is very nice and upscale with its refresh. The commander is a TURD that needs to go!

Where Jeep really messed up is with the Liberty. With people wanting to downsize from their full size Jeeps to something smaller but still needing a SUV the Libety would have been the perfect size. In looking to get out of our Commander but stay with a Jeep I was looking at the 08 Liberty. The problem is it barely gets better gas milage than the Grand Cherokee and about the same as the Wrangler which are all poor. The Liberty could of been to Jeep what the Ford Escape is to Ford. They could have given it a power plant that would have at lease seen average milage in the mid 20's. My problem is I would like to downsize to a smaller Jeep without going to the compact Patriot but what will I gain in milage - Nothing.

Give it a bit of time. The KK liberty is a great vehicle except for its powertrain. They held over the anemic 3.7L and 42RLE transmission from the KJ for two reasons - (1) putting their current 4.0L V6 would have left people with no reason whatsoever to buy a Nitro, and (2) the phoenix engines are coming. These new engines aren't ready yet, but they'll be available in the KK Liberty as soon as they are ready, probably late summer 2009 in the 2010 Liberties.

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/phoenix-engines.html

If you get a KK Liberty with the 3.6L phoenix engine and manual transmission, you could easily see 25mpg average, I bet. The 4.0L should be able to average 23 or so. Highway mileage should be much better due to MDS. I really just hope they don't mate these engines to the 42RLE tranny. If they do, any chance they had of me replacing my KJ with a KK will have evaporated.

very interesting article on the Phoenix engines...i might just wait the 1+ years to see what happens with this engine...i would also like to see jeep have a hybrid suv such as the liberty...i dont know what will happen but i do know i like jeep but with fuel going through the roof...right now $3.80+ in my neighborhood im sticking with my toyota corolla for the MPG...i hate it but i had to do it for my job as i drive 40K a year and my GC and Unlimited at both around 15mpg didnt cut it...so had to go much smaller to save the $$$$$$...good thing is i got what i owed on them on a 4 year note with only ttl down...so not ripped off....looking at the compass but the front is just so dang ugly...and the patriot...hmmm not quite what im looking for in a jeep...sooner or later i'll be back in the jeep family

I agree with you...i would have luved to see something along the line of the ford escape done by jeep...the Patriot is nice...but something about it i just dont want to buy one...the liberty i like alot but the mpg is poor...so something in between the liberty and patriot with similar MPG to the escape would have bee nice...i owned an escape for 2 years and was averaging 22 mpg..not bad and was very nice to drive...if jeep would have had something similar to that today i would be there right now writing a check for the purchase......

U don't need a crystal ball to see that the sales levels of the Commander & Compass are not sustainable, so a bye-bye to them is imminent. Get 'em while they're hot!

The redesign of the GC to add right angles & stretch it a bit sounds good (& long overdue). That leaves JEEP with a small, medium & large size brick, and of course the REAL JEEPs --Wranglers.

Add the JT and one or two JK/JT powertrain options, and the sustainable lineup is complete, at least for a few years. The only viable way I can see Jeep meeting the ever-increasing CAFE levels is to introduce a slew of hybrids. Key word: viable. I believe Jim Press has hinted as much. Unfortunately, the sticker shock will surely be painful...

Of course, there's always the Phoenix engines waiting in the wings (excuse the pun) but they would be thirstier than hybrids... even with MDS... Remember, the V6 Phoenix engines are supposed to close off 3 of the 6 cyclinders at highways speeds... that's quite a balancing act!

The times... they are a changin'...

 Again... WHY?
So current (non boxified) GC sells 40,000 so far this year.

Commander sells 20,000 so far this year.

Yet you (and many others) say the GC needs to get boxier and bigger (more like Commander).....

Makes absolutely NO sense to me.

AngryNJ,

Even though I prefer the Commander, myself... I COMPLETELY agree with you on this one. It makes no sense. There's no reason to take the GC into boxier territory, we've got the KK and Patriot for that. Leave the GC where it is as it sells well. Sadly, the Commander has to go and the GC needs to stay as-is, style-wise.
