MiscellaneousJeep Competitor Hummer to be Sold?

MSNBC is reporting that with GM's recent sales woes and their recent announcement of the closing of 4 truck and SUV plants, they are considering selling or revamping the Hummer brand.

CEO Rick Wagoner said Tuesday before the automakerís annual meeting in Delaware the plants to be idled are in Oshawa, Ontario; Moraine, Ohio; Janesville, Wis.; and Toluca, Mexico. He also said the iconic Hummer brand will be reviewed and potentially sold or revamped.

Wagoner said the GM board has approved production of a new small Chevrolet car at a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, in mid-2010 and production of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle in Detroit.

Wagoner announced the moves in response to slumping sales of pickups and SUVs brought on by high oil prices. He said a market shift to smaller vehicles is permanent.

I think the only reason for Cerebus to purchase the AM General brand would be to slap a Jeep logo on the H1 and get back into the military vehicle industry.

AM General is not up for sale (HUMMER isn't either for that matter). AM General is not the same thing as HUMMER. GM owns the HUMMER brand, they do not own AM General.

The H1 has already been discontinued for civilian production, and it's in the process of being replaced for military use as well.

To make it even more confusing, even though GM bought the "HUMMER" brand from AM General, AM General is under contract to assemble the H2 for GM!

The intro of the H2 (&H2T) cannibalized almost all of the H1 (formerly just the "HUMMER" --derived from the HMMWV) sales. The intro of the H3 cannibalized a lot of the H2 sales. The intro of the H3T (which looks awesome) is planned for the fall... For awhile, GM was planning on introducing an H4 to compete directly with the Wrangler.

Hmmmm, I see a pattern emerging...

Alternative fuels, espeically E85 are BS and will only serve to destroy the farming industry further. Besides, the oil companies have too much to lose allowing E85 to be dominate oil. The oil companies bsaically run the country or world for that matter.

10% of the gas we buy today in E85, why gas does not cost less because of this i don't know. E85 gives less mileage per gallon so we will still be paying the same for a gallon and get less mileage from it if we convert to 100% E85. I will guarantee you it won't cost any less.

Electric or hybrid vehicles are NOT the answer, they take more energy to produce, maintain and dispose of than ANY gas powered vehicle. Where to you think the electricity comes from to charge the batteries... coal and oil.

My money is on fuel cell vehicles. Honda is testing them now in California and will soon have a power generator for your home that will allow you to go off the power grid and produces hydrogen to power your car. A couple more years and they will have it ready for mass consumption.

Most of the gasoline sold at pumps right now contains up to 10% ethanol, which would kinda make it "E10" if you went by that nomenclature.

E85 contains 85% ethanol.

Jeep will not die, unlike the rest of the SUV segment.

Remember the Jeep Cherokee started the SUV craze, and Jeep will be one of the few lone survivors.

Other automakers started the trend of outsizing each other, culminating in the Ford Excursion.

Again, Jeep needs a Diesel and Hybrid Hydraulic Transmission to get 35-40 mpg in all of it's larger cars, Wrangler, Liberty and Cherokee...

Jeep needs to DROP the compass and build a Willys-type vehicle with a Renegade-type diesel electric hybrid drivetrain.

Patriot? I can go either way---again a Renegade-type drivetrain would be better that 28 mpg.

does that mean am general too? if so it should go back to jeeps hands again.

but all jeep really needs is a pickup and a little cj2a type vehicle with a small diesel.

This news worries me, Americas love affair with the suv is dying a quick death, the higher the price of gas goes the faster the suv segement dies. In case anyone has forgotten the Jeep brand is totally an suv brand just like Hummer. If GM can walk away from it's off-road brand so could Chrysler. The only real difference between Jeep and Hummer is the fact that Jeep has the Compass and the Patriot. Ont the other hand how many of us want either one of those for our next Jeep.

Throw a new MDS 6 cyl engine in either the Compass or Patriot and I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Heck, I might even go for one with a manual and the 2.4 to be used for my daily driver.

This news worries me as well. Jeep has showed some true promise to diesel and alternative fuel technology with the various concepts they've brought out the last few years. I, myself, have been personally debating what I will do over the next 6 months with my vehicles and I'm wondering where my Commander fits in.

Since the Rubicon is basically paid off in 2 months, I'm thinking a hybrid is in our plans to save both of them for the time being.

Hopefully, Jeep will stay an american brand and isn't sold off to a TATA motors or a chinese govt. based company.

GM is smart to make this market shift by producing smaller cars....Jeep Should be doing the same.

The Chevy Volt will revolutionize the auto market as we know it, especially Patriotic Americans like myself who are OUTRAGED that the President of the United States had to go to Saudi Arabia, our so-called close ally in the region, hat in hand, and ask for additional oil to be produced, only to be insulted by the Fat King who said that Americans use too much gas, have a weak american dollar and so-forth...

OK KING FATSO...In 2 years your 12% share of oil being imported into America is going to be all but replaced by Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles like the Chevy VOLT, that can drive for 40 miles on an electric charge without using liquid fuel...

And Hopefully, that engine in the VOLT will run on E85, so at best all the oil you can expect to sell to America is 15% of 12% of the market share, and that share will further dwindle when Alternativce fuels kick in...The President was right about one thing, This WILL force America to shift to Alternative fuels.

Chrysler (JEEP) should be doing the same with a RENGADE-type drivetrain.

For as much development that was put into the Hummer (H1) as a military vehicle, the IED made it a sitting duck, and no amount of battlefield upgrades will save it. The military ultimately switched to a Mack-Truck-based v-hull machine with a higher cab to protect the occupants.

E85 is nothing but a boondoggle right now. Maybe in a few years the tech will advance to the point that makes E85 a truly viable alternative fuel, but right now it's just not a good choice.

Oh yeah, and Jeep has no business building small "cars". Maybe small SUVs, CUVs, or UTEs, but not "cars".

"Cars" are what the Dodge and Chrysler brands are for.

Chryslerbus needs to focus on making their whole product portfolio smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient (and better looking!)
