Grand CherokeeNew Version of Grand Cherokee SRT Caught Testing in Desert?
Posted by mike on 2008/6/25 8:48:00 (1395) reads

Our friends over at AutomotiveTraveler.com recently spied several vehicles being testing in the Mojave Desert in California. Among them were several Grand Cherokees:

The camouflage on the front of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 would seem to indicate that the limited production Grand Cherokee SRT8 will get a new front fascia (the Jeep engineers were probably confirming that the nose job had no ill effects on cooling) at some point in the 2009 model year, possibly with a bump in horsepower. Might the SRT8 engines be getting some sort of gas-saving multi displacement system to de-activate four of its eight cylinders? Possibly, but when the Grand Cherokee SRT8 was launched we were told that the system wasn't compatible with the hyper-performance Hemi.

Likely this is a hot weather test for the new front clip belonging to the 2011 Jeep grand cherokee that will get a 2 mode hybrid hopefully with a 4.2 Cummins v6.....The hemi hybrid is a joke

PS. looks like the trail hawk front clip...Look closely

Our the guys at Chrysler out of touch or what? Where the hell is the Grand Cherokee hybrid? $4 a gallon gas and you making a SRT gas guzzler. As Senfield says "Who are the marketing wizards that came up with that one? No wonder why sales suck.

Mabye it was the primo hybrid system undergoing testing, after all, you can only get it with a HEMI.

I know they were talking platfrom sharing with the Durango, but with the recent fuel price dilema, I'd put what's left of my gas money on the Grand Cherokee being based on the 'Trailhawk' concept, with a fuel-saving HEMI with MDS and Hybrid power. Mabye a little smaller than the current GC, mabye a little more space-conscious inside, mabye a Commander version no bigger than the current GC

I would still like to see a simple Hybrid system for the Wrangler not unlike the Porsche Cayene Hybrid, which sandwiches an electric motor between the engine and transmission, and a 'second start-ernator' to shut the engine when the car stops/idles.Toss ina 40mile@40M.P.H. battery pack and were in business.

P.S. Jeep-Ditch the Compass, build the Willys

Hmmm, $4.15/ gallon of gas- yet another gas guzzling "sports SUV". Sorry but wasn't this concept big about 5 years ago when gas was affordable?

I guess I just dont get it- Jeep is in a horrible position right now, with 90% of its line up being comprised of inefficient SUV's. With CAFE laws looming and the public running from SUVs faster than an olympic sprinter, wouldn't it better to invest in redesigning their line up: smaller/ lighter GC's and JK's ? with smaller more efficient engines (diesel ?)?

For that small slice of America that wants a 400+HP GC and is willing to layout $40-50Gs, the difference between $40/week & $80/week for a typical tank of gas shouldn't dissuade them... Personally, I'd pull the fuse on any MDS system in the SRT8. I wouldn't want to lose even a millisecond...

Gotta admit, 0-60mph in <5sec, wet or dry, is pretty cool. I'd hate to see America lose ALL their performance inspiration like they did in the early/mid 70s... takes all the fun out of the driving experience...

Speaking of fun... Does anyone remember the Wrangler SRT6 from the April07 (April Fools) issue of Jp Magazine?

I'd consider it if it had a stick... why not the manual gearbox from the Viper (and Ram SRT10)?

Where's the SRT6 (or SRT8) JK? Now that would be inspiring news! Hey, I can always dream...
