From the now-tell-us-something-we-don't-know department, Chrysler vice-chairman and President Jim Press told a gathering of automotive writers that the Jeep brand has some potential:

The Jeep brand must not be devalued by less-rugged vehicles that don't live up to Jeep's off-road image, Jim Press, Chrysler LLC vice-chairman and president, told a roomful of auto writers yesterday.

"We need to keep it a genuine Jeep image, we can't dilute it by trying to sell out the volume of the brand on 'faux' Jeeps. We want to return to our roots and have trail-rated authentic Jeeps that have value," Mr. Press said during a speech here to members of the Automobile Press Association.

Commenting further on Jeep, Mr. Press said, "Our customers are passionate about their vehicles," adding that many Jeep enthusiasts have the brand name tattooed on their bodies.

"There's a loyal owner body, and it's not only here, it's international. We don't really have an international market coverage. Not only could we expand Jeep and make it a deeper, richer, truer product, we don't have to really worry about volume."

"The global opportunity for Jeep is tremendous," he said.

Of course Jeep is world brand. The Jeep was built to conquer during WW2. The countries that didn't get their butts kicked by it, were saved by it.
It ironic, because as American as the Jeep brand is, the world market actually needs to Wrangler platform more than the USA (because of all the blacktop we have). In some parts of the world, the first vehicle they ever see is a Jeep. Producing the Wrangler CRD is a huge step towards being taken seriously worldwide.
I think that Jeep has consistantly missed the mark with their diesel offerings in the US. Liberty and Grand Cherokee? Come-on! What's next the Compass 1.2L CRD.
Jeep has sooo much great potential, they just keep getting the parts and Vehicle names mixed-up in the US.
And that boys and girls is why Jeep sales are falling.

Producing ruggedized military-spec hybrid systems at a consumer price level will be quite challenging, but that should be the goal. If you have lofty goals and just fall a little short, you still have a viable great product.
Start by increasing efficiency, then look for ruggedized substitutions on each component. Invent what you need to, but definitely make full use of the Chrysler (and yes still a little Daimler) connections for sourcing.
If you are going to build a 'big' SUV like the C'mmander, make sure it has a truely commanding presence in the market by providing it with everything you've got. It's really a mid-size lsmaller than the 1st generation Durango.

Ya don't see Hummer sitting on their laurels only offering 1 engine in any of their vehicles.

. . . . and what is the reason for Hummer's sale decline, or GM's, or Fords, or . . . . ?

Sales figures rise and fall in cyclical fashion. If Jeep added an all diesel lineup, their sales would probably suck even more, with the added up front costs in the down economy.

Blah,Blah,Blah talk is cheap Mr. Press. We Jeep enthusiast have heard all this before with little to show for it. Like the replacement for the XJ was going to be better in every way then you gave us the Liberty. How about those entry level high mpg Jeeps that were going to be "real Jeeps" and we get the Patriot and the Compass which can not even earn the made up "Trail Rated" badge. Then you build one of the best concepts ever "Gladiator" which you water down to the JT and refuse to build either of them. Give us something that will knock our socks off or don't even try. We will just keep rebuilding our CJ's, TJ's, YJ's, MB's, XJ's, MJ's, J-10's, J-20's, Scramblers and Wagoneers.

Yes, of course, Jeep has potential...Jeep needs to be the leader in Hybrid by offering some type of Hybrid system in each model, even if it is a simple Start-Stop Hybrid system, all the way up to a PiHV system like the Renegade Concept.

What Jeep needs to do is lose the Compass and Patriot, and replace it with a 4-5 seat Renegade-type Hybrid, hopefully based on the WILLYS concept.

"adding that many Jeep enthusiasts have the brand name tattooed on their bodies."
That was a stupid comment.
What about many Jeep enthusiasts..... only drive Jeeps, go to many Jeep sponsored events, are Jeep owners for life, spends lots of money on their Jeeps etc.
Instead it makes it sound like we are a bunch of Harley type enthusiasts that like to decorate our bodies with tattoos and nose rings.
