Concept/DemonstrationJeep shows off Wrangler EV!
Posted by Jeepin on 2008/9/23 10:10:54 (2642) reads

CNBC has an article online about Chrysler showing off some new ev concept vehicles recently. Four vehicles were shown off, ranging from an egg-shaped "pea pod" all-electric vehicle intended for "gated communities" to an extended range Minivan with a system similar to what is used in the Renegade concept and the up-coming GM VOLT. What really caught my attention though, was the Wrangler ev! It's an extended range hybrid electric vehicle, again similar to the Renegade Concept and VOLT in that it can run up to 40 miles on purely electric power, then a small internal combustion engine kicks in to extend the range to 400 miles.

Check out the full video.

There was also a full electric Dodge branded sports car, ala the Tesla Roadster, that appears to be based off the new Lotus Europa, looks pretty dang cool.

Wow, sign me up! I've been asking for one of these for about 2 years.

I guess I'll wait a little on buying a Jeep, afterall.

------------

Dear Jeep,

Don't drop the ball on this. Production of this will have me in one of your vehicle ASAP, especially if it's available in a Rubicon version with similar towing capabilities.

Thanks,

Bill

I must admit, it looks pretty slick --dare I say it's already in (pre-)production garb (as opposed to merely prototype garb).

I guess if we're willing to pay $40,000 they'll build 'em. Wait! $40,000 sounds a tad steep! That extra $15,000 would sure buy a lot of gas!

The irony of this may be the following: remember that JEEP Wrangler was already being touted as one of the "greenest" vehicles on the planet, when considering it's entire (i.e., long) life cycle from womb to tomb...

Sooo, would this new "greenmobile" be more or less environmentally friendly if its WHOLE life cycle is taken into consideration. There's no lead & acid in those baterries, is there?

Let the debates begin... I'm really wondering, like the Chevy Volt (estimated sticker $40K) how many will pay a premium for this? If ~100,000 gas-powered Wranglers are sold per year, would this vehicle even make a blip on the screen?

Legislation in congress right now would offer $2500 to $7500 rebate on the first 250,000 sold. No lead or acid in the batteries, they are Li-Ion batteries (vs. the current Prius using Ni-MH)

Today, I stand Vindicated...This is amazing!!! I can't believe they did it...I guess the 'you talk, we listen ' website is for real...

Now Chrysler needs to build this Jeep, and many more like it.

I am sure it would be trail-rated or they would have made a 'Nitro' EV'.

Exciting as the idea is, I am not so sure about an EV wrangler in water crossings. I already have enough problems with the electronics in my TJ when I navigate through a couple of feet of water. Imagine submerging all those batteries and their connections underwater.

I am sure they have figured out a way to keep out the water just like they design ways to keep water out of your differentials.

who knows...maybe the EV won't be a "Trail Rated" Wrangler. I know that I'd probably buy one, even with a commute that's only 9 mi round trip. By 2010 my LJ will be paid off and become a "toy", so I could definitely use this as a stock commuter. I was considering a few suburu's or another small AWD vehicle for the fun WI winters.

Heck, my wife might just have to give up her XJ and move to a JK-EV

If any of these make it to market it will be a miracle or at least another 10 years.

Wait, this isn't new news!

Didn't Fisher-Price come out with an electric JEEP some years ago?

Re: Jeep shows off Wrangler EV!
Why don't they put solar panels on top of the Wrangler's very flat roof to further extend the range of the vehicle (or if they build this, they could make it an upgrade option).

That would be great for those of us living in the Southwest. The panels could at least partially recharge the batteries while the vehicle is sitting in the parking lot while we are at work as well power the periodically cycling of the A/C to keep the interior temperature down.

While driving the panels could still trickle charge the batteries perhaps to increase the range of the electric motor. There is a company that has produced a way to "print" solar panels that are relatively cheap. Chrysler should team up with them.

Also, would replacing the small gas motor with a small displacement diesel increase the range even further?
