LibertyChrysler Eliminating One Shift From Toledo (Jeep Liberty) Assembly

With the ongoing economic downturn, it was only a matter of time before stuff like this started happening. Chrysler has announced that they'll be eliminating one of the two shifts at their Toledo North Assembly Plant in Ohio. Toledo North is responsible for the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro.

The shift reduction at Toledo North will be effective December 31, 2008, and will affect approximately 825 jobs. The closure of the Newark plant will also be effective December 31, 2008, and will affect approximately 1,000 jobs.

Chrysler is committed to working with the UAW to address the represented manpower reductions in a socially responsible manner. As the Company has done in the past, the UAW and management leadership will hold employee meetings to review special programs that will be offered at the affected locations.

Currently, the Toledo North Assembly Plant has approximately 2,100 employees and operates on two shifts, producing Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty. Employees are represented by UAW Local 12.

I wish they'd hurry up and come out with a Rubicon capable plug in hybid, with a range extender engine. The concept of the Jeep Willys is good, but the concept looked like a bread truck. I like smoother lines. The video thay released of Engineers driving Jeeps in the sand showed some Wrangler like vehicles with very short hoods, Those were cool. My XJ wants a new home. I want a PIHV, ideally with hubs in the wheels and heavy axles to lug around. Ironically Dr Porsche invented a hybrid vehicle in 1902 that had electric motor hubs in the wheels with power coming from a generator fed by a gasoline engine.

The good news (I guess) is that Cerebus is shopping for a single buyer for the Chrysler Corporation, so that will give Jeep a better chance in staying in the USA.

From what I read, Durango/Aspen will dissappear, although they concede the Hybrid model is doing well.

In it's place will be a Grand Cherokee based on the trailhawk concept...More importantly, available with a diesel engine, or a Phoenix V-6 with MDS, and available with a hybrid transmission.

A Diesel or V-6 with the hybrid transmission would get 28-35 mpg...Let's hope these drivetrains make it into the Wrangler and the Liberty as well

Part of the press release is regarding the Newark plant.
I guess this means the Durango/Aspen Hyrbrid models will be very limited for 2009. I wonder why they even bothered? I guess they figured they would make them for one model year but now its will be like half the model year. I bet between now and the end of the year they will be able to build a several months supply of them the way the large SUV is selling now. End of era. Does anyone know what else they use to make at that plant?

As far as the Toledo factory I wonder if this is part of the plan to rid themselves of the Nitro. Sales are off 50% this year. Liberty sales are better but they did say either the Liberty or Nitro would be canceled and I have to believe that the Liberty is pretty safe.

I heard today on the news that an entire jeep plant was being closed and now I read they are eliminating an entire shift at another guess it has to be done.....instead of going into talks with the UAW they are just closing plants and cutting more fuss over pay...just shutter down....
