WranglerWrangler EV to be Built at Toledo North Assembly

During a pep rally yesterday at Chrysler's Toledo North Assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio, Chrysler Vice Chairman and President Tom LaSorda indicated that the Wrangler EV would be assembled in that very plant.

To date, Chrysler hasn't indicated when or where any of their 3 EV models will be produced - only saying that one of them would be available as a 2010 model.

While it is unclear as to when the Wrangler EV will begin production, at least we now know the where...

Asked after his speech at the Toledo rally whether any of those vehicles would be made in Toledo, Mr. LaSorda turned to glance at the shiny white Jeep EV - electric vehicle - prototype and said, "One is right there."

Chrysler unveiled three electric prototypes in September, including the Jeep EV, a minivan, and a sports car. But officials at that time said only one would be produced by 2010 and they declined to reveal which one or where any would be produced.

The Jeep prototype was a four-door Wrangler that seats five and runs on electricity, but has a back-up gas-burning motor to generate electricity once the battery charge runs out after about 40 miles of use. The so-called "range extended vehicles" rely on a lithium-ion battery system that plugs into a standard household outlet.

To make the vehicle would require retooling at Toledo Jeep, company officials said. But whether it would mean additional workers was unclear.

Toledo Jeep now makes two and four-door Wranglers and the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro.

Hey Nardelli....stop talking about it an build it already...

I want this as my commuter vehicle. That way my LJ can become just a toy (I can really beat on it then)

Hell, my wife has been looking @ a Patriot but she's so "eco" focused, that she said she'd drive the Jeep EV...then I'd have an XJ to be another toy too.

I agree. Just build it, in both 2 and 4 door versions. And make a Rubicon version too. I'd prefer to see 4 electric motors, one in the hub of each wheel, with a suspension that makes use of this technology and eliminates much of the power robbing dead weight of the traditional drivetrain. But I'd be willing to wait for the Phase II version and buy the phase I for now.

Funny in a most ironic way ... we have been asking for a fuel efficient high torque diesel for the wrangler for years, and they give us an electric jeep.

I cannot fathom why a company that produces 40 MPG turbo diesel Patriots with six speed manual trannies in this country and then exports to markets abroad cannot provide the NA with comparable.

But, then again that's maybe why they are going down the tubes ...
