Sales numbers for February were recently released and - get ready for it - the numbers actually so some improvement. Don't get me wrong, they're still in the toilet, but they just might be floating a little bit higher.
The big news is that Chrysler increased its U.S. market share by about 1.5% to 11%. The market share came mostly at the expense of GM.
The big news for the Jeep brand is that Wrangler sales are up a full 28% compared to February, 2008.

Well, some of that could be speculation of collectors?
It’s definitely not gas mileage with 15/19 MPG It has much to do with price, down from 24K to 18K, yeah that’s a big discount! They could use a CJ comeback, I wonder? A four cylinder rear drive version priced lower, much lower. Fiat for sure must have a turbo diesel that would get 150hp? I wish for the Gladiator, but not the name though I’d rather it be called a Scrambler than Gladiator, actually neither. I want a pick up, rear drive and a 4 cylinder that gets over 20 in the city and close to 30 on the highway. And cost less than 15K a Ranger, Tacoma, Colorado/Canyon alternative. I actually want rubber flooring and vinyl seats, it does not need an extended cab for me, I think base model best price, then top it off with best in class mileage. 4cyl and a five speed is fine. GM has a universal platform in the works, can be front or rear drive, and comes in short and long versions. Does any else know that? That’s kind of really revolutionary isn’t it? I do not think that the guy with the top of the line is offended by a base model is he? The range is it intentionally always high end? Broaden the range on the Icon, then introduce the Panda under it, just make it look like a jeep, maybe a two door? That’s the thing they have to have a 4-6-8 cylinder options as well as low to high ranges, then the if things change the mix changes. The leader has to have 4-6-8 in all configuration inline and transverse, then turbo and diesel as well. Chrysler is smart to get with Fiat, they have all kinds of engines, they own Ferrari and Maserati ! As well as make off road vehicle…http://www.daily4x4.iveco.com/ |

As usual the consumer speaks louder and more accurately than the automaker brass are willing and able to listen.
So much of what would cure the American auto company ills is simple..."give the consumer what they want..and they will buy it"..DUH! Chrysler needs to dump the non-competitive cars and stick to what works (some Jeeps come to mind)...especially in this time of meltdown. Larry http://www.4-the-love-of-jeeps.com |

I am one of the 9,088 that bought a wrangler in February. There were a number of factors involved in the decision:
1) There does not appear to be any chance that JEEP is going to put a v8 in the Wrangler within the next 10 years. So, there is no sense waiting any longer for one (basically this was the main factor in my decision ).2) A 48 month loan, for the Wrangler, at 0.0 percent financing doesn’t happen that often. 3) The dealer offered me $2,000 more for my 2003 Rubicon then my research led me to believe I would get. 4) The dealer incentives totaled to around $3,500 which is a far larger discount then I have ever been offered for a Wrangler .5) If Chrysler were to go bankrupt, I really doubt the service would be much different then it is now (If the warranty turns out to be worthless, I guess I will just have to hope I don’t need it. It has never seemed to be of much value in the past anyway.) It has always been my experience that the day after I buy something, people tell me I could have gotten a better deal… I am sure someone, somewhere could beat the deal I got. I can live with that. But, I still think most people in the market for a new Wrangler will have a hard time finding a better time to buy then now. |

Wranglers never ever ever have significant discounts. When I bought my Commander back in 07, the out the door price on it (as optioned out as a Sport gets) and on a stripped down JKL were the same. Last month Wranglers got real rebates and look what happened. Sales almost equaled the Liberty and GC COMBINED. I do wonder what's going to happen to Wrangler resale down the road. Right now you can buy a new 09 cheaper than one or two years used. That can't be the case for long. Some people who were counting on the Wrangler's legendary resale value are probably going to get burned.

I will agree with trevorj, cancel the Dakota, and if the Gladiator is built, they will come.
The Liberty is a gem in the snow that is under-marketed. The Patriot's fuel efficiency hasn't been touted to it's full potential either. Build what's wanted, preference to orders. |

Simple answer: SURVIVAL.
The Wrangler (and its direct ancestor CJs, etc.) are symbols of survivalism and an expression of being Spartan. We are in tough times. A Wrangler wrapped around you makes you feel very secure. Everyone got their waterproof matches & bottled water stowed in their bunkers? Don't forget to check those NBC resistant weatherseals around the doors! ![]() |
