WranglerAEV Cooking Up a Civilian J8 Wrangler?

UPDATE: Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - Autoblog is reporting that AEV has announced they'll be offering the J8 MILSPEC for civilian use!

The always-awesome Jalopnik just grabbed some great pics of what appears to be a Wrangler J8 all dressed up in fatigues and ready to go.

Out and about in downtown Royal Oak, Michigan, we spotted these M-plated and AEV-tagged Jeep Wranglers wearing complete military-style gear. What are these guys cooking up?

Just as we were putting our camera away after shooting the green Wrangler Unlimited, the tan extended-wheelbase Scambler-like truck version Wrangler pulls up so back at it we went. These seem to be outfitted with the same specification as the non-civilian Wrangler J8 unveiled in Germany last year for foreign military duty. They get the heavy duty BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A's a beefy front and rear bumper with high grade shackles and a military-style pintle hitch and a "J8" badge on the side. We can't say if they get the same diesel engines the military J8's get, but we did get a hood-up shot, so if there are any hardcore Jeepers out there so skilled, see if you can identify what's powering these babies.

Quit reading and get over to their site to see the pics!

Thanks to kayadog for the heads-up!

It's stupid that Chrysler won't simply produce and sell the danged thing here. Granted, it's not the Gladiator that I wanted but I like the J8 still. I can't imagine that it would cost so terribly much that it wouldn't be worth it. The only profit they seem to be squeezing out these days seems to revolve around the Wrangler anyway...

Geee, now if I only had $50,000.00 laying around for a limited edition Spartan Jeep Scrambler that I've always wanted...

Chrysler isn't going under, they are playing ball with the Tele-Prompter-in-Chief....

What AEV is doing is looking for a conversion project that is something outside of a lift-kit for a Wrangler or Cherokee.

... possibly AEV looking at ways to survive if Chrysler fails. The J8's are produced under license in Egypt, not by Chrysler.
