FacilitiesChrysler Closing One-Quarter of All Dealerships
Posted by mike on 2009/5/14 13:26:25 (2001) reads

Breaking news from CNN (and everywhere else):

Chrysler LLC will close down 789 dealerships, or roughly 25% of the current number, according to a plan filed in bankruptcy court Thursday.

Chrysler had a total of 3,181 authorized dealers in operation at the time of its April 30 bankruptcy court filing, according to court filings. Just over half of that number accounted for more than 90% of Chrysler sales, according to the filing.

The dealers being shut down represent 14% of Chrysler's total sales, the carmaker said.

Also - from Chrysler's press release on the matter:
Chrysler plans to maintain "business as usual" with all of its dealers through the transition. The Company intends to honor warranty and incentive payments during the period that rejected dealers remain active. Chrysler is committed to working with these dealers to ensure a positive relationship with customers. To ease the burden on dealers whose agreements have not been assumed, Chrysler will work to assist in the redistribution of new vehicles and parts to the remaining dealer network.

Looks like they are closing 7 dealers in my area, spread across a 50 mile radius. Most of these dealers were smaller places with limited inventory and outdated facilities. Tough to see them go and the jobs with them, but you gotta do, whatcha gotta do....

Unfortunately the dealer in the city where I work is on the closed list. It is a very large dealership with a large service department and body shop. This is 21 miles from where I live (no dealers of any kind where I live). The next dealer is 23 more miles further. This means I'll never buy another Jeep due to the difficulties of getting parts and service. I see this as a 14% cut in sales.
