Posted by mike on 2009/6/17 16:33:38 (3371) reads

If vehicles rolling off the assembly line are any indication, the Chrysler is getting back to business starting the week of June 29th when the Jeep Wrangler assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio resumes production along with 6 other Chrysler production lines.

From the official press release:

One week after finalizing its global strategic alliance with Fiat Group, Chrysler Group LLC announced today that it will resume volume production of vehicles with the start up of seven of its North American assembly plants the week of June 29, 2009.

As part of a phased production ramp-up, the following assembly plants are scheduled to resume production at the end of the month:

  • Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (Sterling Heights, MI) – Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger

  • Warren Truck Assembly Plant (Warren, MI) – Dodge Ram and Dodge Dakota

  • St. Louis North Assembly Plant (Fenton, MO) – Dodge Ram

  • Toledo Supplier Park (Toledo, OH) – Jeep® Wrangler and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

  • Brampton Assembly Plant (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) – Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Challenger

  • Windsor Assembly Plant (Windsor, Ontario, Canada ) – Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan

  • Toluca Assembly Plant (Toluca, Mexico) – Dodge Journey and Chrysler PT Cruiser

Chrysler Group’s Powertrain and Stamping facilities that supply these assembly plants will also be operating. Chrysler’s Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, which builds the Dodge Viper, resumed production on June 15.

All Chrysler Group plants will be closed during a previously announced two-week Summer Break the weeks of July 13 and 20.

Re-start of production at other Chrysler Group assembly plants will be announced at a later date.

2010 Lineup...
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep Liberty
Jeep Wrangler 2 DR, 4 DR, Scrambler 2DR, JT
Jeep Willys
Jeep Patriot

Considering that Comrade Obama is going to require a 35 M.P.G. C.A.F.E. , any automakers truck/SUV C.A.F.E. will have to average 31M.P.G, and cars will have to average 39 M.P.G.....President Bush didn't help either by setting 'footprint' requirements which would require the Wrangler to get around 27 M.P.G. minimum.

I personally think Obama is barking up the Wrong Tree in the pursuit of the so-called "Fuel Efficient Car'...You may have better luck finding a Unicorn, seeing as how a Chevy Aveo 'only' gets 22/32 M.P.G....Even the Smart Car gets 33/41 M.P.G....Toyota Yaris 29/36..Honda Fit 28/35...These are some of the most efficient non-hybrid cars on the market, and they are not even close to 39 M.P.G. They are also some of the smallest. SUV's are in a similar situation in meeting a 31 M.P.G. average.

Every Jeep model is going to require some sort of Hybrid assist to meet that goal...How can they (Jeep and the New, New, New Chrysler) accomplish that?

1. Every engine (every car, Truck, and SUV) needs to be a Mild Hybrid at minimum (15% better mileage)

2. Every engine that has more than 4 cylinders needs to be able to de-activate half of it's cylinders (10% gain)

3. Every engine needs to be engineered to use Direct Injection (15% gain)

4. Every Engine needs to be able to run on E85...No Mileage Gain, but the upcoming Bio-Fuels will provide a Hedge against foreign oil fluctuations.

5. Larger vehicles like the Wrangler may also need to turn to some form of Hydraulic Kinetic Energy Recovery, Either through Electric Energy Re-Generation, (i.e. Parallel Gas-Electric Hybrid, or Series Hybrid for Manual Transmissions-15% gain) or Hydraulic Energy Recovery, like the HLA-Hydraulic Launch Assist (15% Gain in mileage) or the Hybrid Hydraulic Transmission (Up to 45% gain in mileage).

6. Chrysler REALLY needs to build the EV Wrangler, Patriot, and a Willys Concept-Based PihV, using a Reformer Fuel Cell, hub mounted motors, and hi-capacity batteries---Again, as a Hedge against Fluctuating Oil prices----Many people may not have noticed, but Obama cut all further funding for Fuel Cell research...Why? I would speculate that the Hydrogen storage issue will never be fully solved--Even Obama can't defy the laws of Physics...The more H2 that needs to be stored, the larger the car---The larger the car, the more energy that needs to be used to propel it---The more energy needed to propel the car, the more energy that needs to be stored.

The Jeep EV Extended Range is estimated to be able to drive 40 miles EV, 110 M.P.G. for the first gallon in 'Heavy Hybrid Mode', and 35 M.P.G. for each gallon after that.

As far as electric motors, batteries, hybrid gizmos, etc... The next gen HUMMER repplacement for the military will be just that.

How can they get 31 to 33 mpg? How about a diesel-electric hybrid run off of biodiesel? Oh, wait. That's not offered, is it?

"Comrade Obama," as you call him, is trying to get the auto industry to innovate to meet a changing global marketplace. Cheap oil isn't here forever, but automakers and the oil industry have people hog-tied, so there are no choices. That's what CAFE standards are trying to change.

The only thing Comrade Obama is innovating is placting the Green Agenda...

Re-read my last posting and try to avoid the Aura radiating from the Chosen One, and you will see that the point of my mini-essay is that Greenpeace, The Sierra Club, the Enviro-Goonies, the Obaminites, the Pelosites, The Reid's, The Barney's, The Wax-a-Maniac's, and their agenda of pursuing the'Fuel-Efficient-Car' will never happen...at least without some sort of hybrid power

I quoted the mileage (and actually went through the trouble of looking up their mileage on their websites) of some of the most fuel efficient (non-Hybrid) cars on the market, and none of them could get the 39 M.P.G. required to meet the 35 M.P.G. C.A.F.E. standards for all vehicles.

Now I am all for innovation, don't get me wrong, but what do ANY of our political leaders know or have ever known about building automobiles?

What else CAN the automakers do to make cars more Fuel-Efficient?? Smaller, Lighter? (Less crash-worthy) Smaller engine ?(unable to avoid accidents and get run over by a truck or a bus).

I don't think that Obama is trying to innovate, he is just floating more pie-in-the-sky buzz words...

Solar, Wind, Geo-Thermal, Bio-Fuels, Ethanol, Bio-Diesel, Hydroelectric, innovation, Fuel-Efficient, Job-Creation, Stimulus, BZZZZZZZZZZZ BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ BBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ BBZZZZZZZZZZZ BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH! <~

The politicians and greenies want small, cramped, light ,unsafe cracker-box cars for the little people to toil to and from work and won't want to take them on long trips so that we can all take public transportation, and our removed rif-raf cars will then unclog the highway so that they can travel at limitless speeds and won't have to deal with the scum of the earth they call their Constituients...THAT'S WHY!!!!

Reading is fundamental.

" you will see that the point of my mini-essay is that Greenpeace, The Sierra Club, the Enviro-Goonies, the Obaminites, the Pelosites, The Reid's, The Barney's, The Wax-a-Maniac's, and their agenda of pursuing the'Fuel-Efficient-Car' will never happen...at least without some sort of hybrid power"

By raising fuel economy standards, the government and the enviro-whackos are forcing the automakers to find a way to make a fuel-efficient vehicle through whatever means necessary. We have been using the internal combustion engine for how long now? We have the capabilities to make something more fuel-efficient -- even if that means using some kind of hybrid drive system -- that can bring the fuel economy up to the standards set in CAFE.

Without the CAFE standards, do you really think auto makers are going to do anything to make cars more fuel efficient? Please. They're sucking on oil's proverbial teet. They don't care about fuel efficiency. They care about profits.

People who want hybrids or diesels or a Mr. Fusion-driven car won't get it unless the pressure is put on the automakers. The Greenies are doing that, and I'm all for it. If I can have a diesel-electric hybrid Wrangler, you better believe I'd be the first on in line for it.

All you will get out the Comrade Obama Administration is a Fiat 500, and subsequently get crushed by a semi-truck or a steamroller...

Once again, even Obama is not so great that he can defy the Laws of Physics.

A Diesel Electric Hybrid Wrangler would be nice, but you probably won't see one....Obama is pushing for engines in the 1.2-1.8 L range.

A Reformer Fuel Cell/Hybrid Hydraulic Transmission would probably get even better mileage, but Obama cut funding for Fuel Cell Development...The Reformer Fuel Cell performed the best and was the most viable option for Fuel Cell Power, because it didn't need Compressed Hydrogen, it could convert Gasoline, Alcohol, or Diesel Fuel into Hydrogen and then into electricity, but with funding cut, we are really just looking at the small gasoline engine powering a generator for a battery pack.

Our Supreme Ruler is pushing for small, small, small..Small Cars, Small Engines, He would proabaly Tax peoples height if he could get away with it...

The Presedint has stated that he has no problem with $5.00 and even $10.00 a gallon gas, because that is what Europeans pay...Well WAKE UP COMRADE!!!! This is NOT Europe, this is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...America and Americans do more for the World with a gallon of gas than most other European countries combined, and certainly all of the third-world countries combined...And if you don't like it, Cash in your Kenyan Birth Certificate at the EU and become a European!

Are they retooling the Jefferson North plant? Curious that this one isn't on the list.

Sorry to inform you, but the government isn't known to be overly innovative.
