Miscellaneous3 Jeep Models to be Axed by 2012?

The Wall Street Journal had a cover story today about various Fiat models replacing Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles.

The article predicts that the Compass, Patriot, and Commander will all be discontinued by the year 2012 while the all-new 2010 Grand Cherokee is being counted on for big profits:

For the next two years, Chrysler will have to rely mostly on its current models. It is banking on two revamped vehicles due out next year, a refreshed Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300 sedan, as well as boosting marketing spending on Jeep.

Chrysler plans to introduce a new midsize sedan and compact in 2012 as well as a compact Jeep a year or two later. All three will be based on Fiat underpinnings.

If this is the best Chrysler can do they are DOOOMED!! The new head Jeep guy (can't remember his name) made a statement that Jeep will be brought back to it's roots... i don't think he knows what Jeep roots are. Chrysler, Fiat or whatever your name is please sell Jeep to private investors so Jeeps have a chance to become Jeeps again without the overhead of another Chrysler merger that will again fail. Other than the Wrangler, I will not buy anything Jeep has to offer. I already own a 2006 Commander, which has been a great truck so far, but it gets worse gas mileage than full size SUV's and trucks. The new Grand is going to be a wuss mobile, might as well buy a mini van.

I don't think there will be a "Jeep Panda". Fiat's platform will only benefit from the Magic Jeep Dust.

I'm really thinking more along the lines of the Willys Concept. It might use a Fiat Engine, transmission and floorpan, but the suspension, 4x4 system and bodywork will be all Jeep...But think of the market segment...2 Doors, 4 Cyl, 6 spd, 4x4 with Low speed range...That beats out LR3, Rav4, Suzuki, Escape, and even H3,,,

An actual PANDA might make it as a small Dodge Car, mabye even the long-awaited and Up-coming Hornet, but I dont see it being named a "Jeep" as-is....

And, Yes, getting rid of the Commander, Compass, and Patriot leaves room for a 'Scrambler' and 'JT' variation of the Wrangler 4 door, and as I am hoping for, a small 4 cyl 4x4. With v-6 engines using MDS cylinder deactivation, there is no need for a 4 cyl in the Wrangler anymore.

Logical choices. Overdue for some.

I thought the Patriot would stay, though...

That makes room for the JT (Scrambler-like) and a Willys (like one of the recent dune-buggy-ish 4-banger concepts). Yeah, I wish.

Please, please, please do not be fooled, the PANDA is softest of the softies

Why would Jeep need to 'loan' from Fiat, Fiat should 'loan' from Jeep

I am disapointed, you all selebrate as if the era of the Great Panda has arrived to safe the 'out of idea' Jeep lot

Please believe me the Panda does not add value to Jeep but rather disgrace the once proud name

I am a red blooded Jeep fan but this hurts.

I understand euthanizing the Compass, but as another reader pointed out, the Patriot is a decent seller. Sounds like Fiat/Chrysler is getting rid of all Caliber-related product though, so I guess if one goes they all go.

I have not seen any substantive review of the Fiat Panda, but am really uneasy about a "Jeep Panda." If they do a good job of Jeepin' it up, maybe it has a chance. But they'll definitely have to get the styling right, since the Compass was so widely panned as unattractive and un-Jeep-like. If it's gonna be a Jeep, I hope the lil' Panda is as tough as one of the other commenters suggested it is.

I wont miss the compass, the Patriot is a decent car, and actually a good seller. The Commander is a great truck, and we owned one, but to be honest, we only used the 3rd row seat like 4 times (although it was great to have it when wwe did)...Overall we like our new Liberty better.

Don't forget, that Fiat owns a majority stock in IVECO, and IVECO makes the Massif, which is a tough little 4x4 not sold here (yet), they even make an Massif with a third row.

Ive seen pics and videos of the Panda, and yes, it's a tough little car, Jeep can only turn that little pug into a pit-bull.

I would like to see the Willys Concept make it into production, especially as a PiHV, but definite;y with the Fiat Engine in there.

I'm all for a compact Jeep with a nice Fiat turbo diesel. I can understand hooking that to a Fiat transmission/transfer case because they already have it. But the rest should be Jeep "underpinnings". If the products (axles and suspensions, which should be straight, not independent!) were very rugged and great off highway I might change my opinion. 40 MPG or better (don't laugh, Fiat has a 4wd Panda vehicle that gets 62 MPG now) would be great. And speed this up, I want it now!
