Dave from AllPar just gave us a heads-up on an all new variant of the Jeep Wrangler for 2010 - the "Islander"! It's been over 20 years since the last Wrangler Islander and this version will have very limited quantities.
In addition to standard Sport equipment, the Islander added the 32 inch wheel and tire group, with 17 inch aluminum painted black wheels and LT 225/75R17 mud-terrain T/A tires; tubular side steps; a unique decal; dark gray seats with surf blue inserts and blue logos stitched in; a leather-wrapped steering wheel with blue accent stitching; and rubber slush mats.
Check out all of AllPar's coverage on the Islander including an additional picture.

I have been keeping up on electric drivetrains, and while in hub motors are great, they present a problem in differentiating equal power to all 4 wheels equally...There is a company developing essentially an electric live axle with motors built into what used to be the 'pumpkin' with a torque shaft between the 2 motors to diferentiat torque equally...
Dont count out hybrid hydraulic drivetrains though, a hydraulic pump can absorb more kinetic energy during regen braking than a battery pack, and a fuel cell can use home-generated hydrogen to replace a battery pack, since a fuel cell is essentially a battery when hydrogen is added. |

GM Just Announced that they are tranisitioning to all-electric range-extended drivetrains on all of their vehicles...The GM Volt gets 230 m.p.g. for the first gallon...Jeep is going to have to do better than a sticker-engineered Wrangler...and 225/75/r17 is NOT 32 inches...235/85/R16 is bareley 32 inches at 31.8...ENVI has been discontinued, but supposedly intergrated into the future CHrysler designs...we'll wait and see.

Looks like fun if you have alot of extra $$$ lying around or for a 3rd/4th vehicle if you live in the right place. Ive owned several jeep vehicles from the wrangler, cherokee, grand cherokee and liberty and what i found is that the wrangler although the most fun of them all is tough to use as a daily driver if your commute is long and/or tedious....great for excursions and those sunny days, short drives...just my opinion...now u can bash away, lol.....

What's that, Jeep? You're gonna build a pickup? Oh.. you're not? It's just another Wrangler with a sticker-package? Thanks, but no thanks.
Call me when you've retrieved good sense from it's place, buried deep in Jeep-history. |

I bought a 1989 Islander in the fall of 88 and it has been a terrific vehicle. It's like new with about 13K miles on it. Used mostly for off-road trail riding and Sunday cruises. It is a veteran of about 15 Jeep Jamborees and the Islader offering might be a good addition to motivate some new buyers in the spring. It is good news to see some old school marketing activity from Jeep. Now let's see some new innovative designs and options, not just more decals and seatcovers.
