The fine folks over at allpar are reporting that the Jeep nameplate might have a new entry-level vehicle in 2013 now that the Compass is on its way out:
Coming in as Jeep’s entry level model and somewhat replacing the Compass, is a Fiat Panda derived Jeep. Built in Toluca along the the Fiat 500, the Trailduster is more than just another all wheel drive econo-box.

It's just speculative artists' renderings but what really pisses me off is the fact that they even have a reasonable basis for this. By seeing the Nitro or the Dodge compact (whatever the heck it's called) we can assume that the Liberty or Compass would be the same ugly without ever seeing them. No reason to think that a Panda-based Jeep wouldn't be hideous as well.
I'd like to see something at that size have M38 styling. Do a complete departure from the Panda look, don't just slap a 7-slot grille on it. Some flat fenders and an open top would be a nice touch (sometimes I think all Jeeps should have removable top variants) but they're not as aerodynamic as those ergonomically shaped ladyhatchbacks they build nowadays… |

Sorry, but those imaginings for the Jeeps suck. I'd rather have the Compass or Patriot any day over something that looks like the Panda.

If they make this with the 95 HP turbo Diesel (PLEASE!!) it would get 60 mpg! This is what the Fiat 500's get with this engine. So at a minimum it would be a great commute car and be able to handle snow. In Europe these things are used for extreme jeeping (see you tube). JP magazine speculated that they might even use a mini Wrangler/Samauri type body or something similar to the renegade concept for this. If so it would sell like hot cakes. With the new CAFE rules they need a ultra high MPG vehicle to balance out the very low MPG Wranglers and GC's. If they do this right I'd buy one in a flash!

I like the Stinger and the redesigned Charger, The Trailduster would be a nice entry level Jeep, I'd prefer it over the current Compass...There was a comparo on BBC TV of a Panda Vs. a Land Rover Discovery trying to ascend out of a quarry with obstacles....The LR bested the Panda by only 3 seconds, and you could probably buy 4 pands for the price of one LR...I also like the Compass Freedom...
I would like to see Start-Stop on the Pentastar V6-6 speed manual transmission Wrangler, and Start -Stop/2 mode transmission for the Wrangler Automatic... |
