From a Chrysler press release
The Jeep Brand posted a 111 percent sales increase compared with the same month a year ago. All Jeep models in production posted a sales gain during October. Sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the brand's volume leader, increased 291 percent in October compared with a year ago, driven predominately by sales of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was named "SUV of Texas" by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA). The automotive industry's new benchmark, premium SUV also was named "Full-Size SUV of Texas" by this influential panel of automotive journalists. The 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara – complete with an all-new interior, body-color hard top, and legendary Jeep capability – took home the "Mid-Size SUV of Texas" crown.
Sales of the iconic Jeep Wrangler increased 49 percent compared with October 2009. Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass also had a strong October as each model posted triple-digit percentage sales increases. The new 2011 Jeep Patriot, the affordable compact sport-utility vehicle, arrives in dealership showrooms this month with rugged new exterior styling, interior enhancements, and refinements to the suspension and steering systems.

My friends keep asking me why I keep buying older Jeeps instead of the newer ones. They seem specifically confused when I opted not to sell my XJ after I bought my TJ. Jeep really doesn't have a vehicle that compares to the Cherokee. Sure, it has some nice vehicles but none of them offer what the Cherokee offered. The Patriot could have been so much more. So could the Liberty. I was hoping that the updated Liberty would have been more XJ-like in terms of specs and capability.
2 million XJ buyers can't all have been wrong. We've always thought it was the bean counters who controlled decisions at Chrysler-Jeep, but if they did, surely they would have noticed the correlation. |

It's wonderful to see thenumbers going up at such a high rate during a deep recession. But consider that during it's 18 year production run, the XJ Cherokee averaged over 160,000 units per year and topped out at over 286,000+ units per year in 1996. Consider how the numbers might look if they still built a vehicle that fit the Cherokee concept (lightweight, rugged, comfortable but rugged interior, big baggage area for camping, good fuel mileage, a decent low range, solid axles, and very trail capable) all for a decent price. The only thing Jeep has now to compare it to is the Wrangler Unlimited, but it is limited by it's underpowered minivan engine, wide width that eliminates it from narrow Jeep trails, and it's very overweight. I don't care for the blind spot created by the fold down windshield. The fuel mileage sucks and the price tag is too high.
Still waiting for a worthy updated replacement. |
