According to Jeep top dog Mike Manley (in an interview in Automotive News), despite the fact that it will be based on a Fiat platform, replacements for the Jeep Compass and Patriot will be developed in house by Jeep engineers.
Although the replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot will come from a front-wheel-drive Fiat car platform, Jeep CEO Mike Manley wants to be very clear about its Jeep bona fides and off-road capability.
"Even though the technology and the platform is Fiat, it will be 100 percent Jeep," Manley said. The vehicle, he added, will be developed by "pure Jeep engineers. That's why product stays here in the U.S."
In about 18 months, the new Jeep will replace both the Compass and Patriot compact crossovers, which share a platform, engine and optional equipment. Those vehicles offer both fwd and all-wheel-drive configurations.

I'm still wondering what Jeep will do to/for the upcoming Panda Jeep. Will it just be a 7 slot grill on the ugly but somewhat capable Panda econobox with tiny tires? Or will it be along the lines of a Suzuki Samauri or an updated Flat-fender Willys? Or? Their target intro on this has slipped to 2013, but that's coming up fast. I want it to be trail capable, get super fuel mileage with the 95 HP Diesel, and fit a tall American (me). And it had better have a low range or granny first gear, limited slip or selectable lockers, and good axle travel/articulation. It could be done, but there is so much that could go wrong! They should just let the customers design their own vehicles! The FAA lets me build my own airplane with all the features and weird ideas I want, so why not cars?
As I understand it the Panda Jeep will be on a B segment platform, awhile the Patriot/Compass replacement is a C segment, so a different vehicle. |
