Chrysler head-honcho Sergio Marchionne announced at a North American International Automotive Show press conference that the Grand Wagoneer nameplate will be returning to the Jeep brand in 2013.
Jeep now plans to revive one of its most hallowed nameplates, the Grand Wagoneer, for a new upscale SUV with seven-seat capacity. That was the promise made by Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne who announced at a press conference at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show this week that a new Grand Wagoneer will arrive by January of 2013.
It will share a platform with the recently launched Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango. Interestingly, 2013 will also see the launch of a Maserati SUV based on the same platform.
MotorTrend also has coverage of the announcement, including a stab at the Commander by Marchionne:
The move isn’t entirely unprecedented — after all, the seven-seat Commander was derived from the last-generation WK Grand Cherokee platform — but Marchionne promises the new vehicle will be an entirely new beast.
“That [Commander] was unfit for human consumption,” Marchionne remarked when Automotive News asked how the new Grand Wagoneer would differ from the Commander. “We sold some, but I don’t know why people bought them.”

I believe that Jeep/Chrysler agreed to discontinue all other Naitive American Names in exchange for the use of the Cherokee Name for the Grand Cherokee...So Comanche is out for any new models....Of course, I dont recall the Grand Wagoneer Nation putting up any fuss...That's okay, I like the Universal Jeep names better. Jeepster, Commando, etc.

Interesting to read about how Jeep can no longer use tribal names. In our UK market the Liberty is known as a Cherokee. However having had a real Cherokee I would say the Liberty does not really cut it which is why I now drive a long wheel base Wrangler.

I credit Sergio for giving his honest opinion.
I test drove a Commander, and when my 4 year old could climb into the 3rd row & it was out of the question for any adult = I don't know why anybody would get the 3rd row option. I did like the larger cargo area without the 3rd row, and of course the V8. Good boxy Cherokee styling was classic Jeep. I hope Fiat and Chrysler keep the Grand Wagoneer full-sized and bigger than the Durango, and put properly sized rear doors for 3rd row access easily. Target market is the Sequoia, Expedition, and Yukon. Offer every drivetrain and engine combo from 4-cylinder diesel, to Phoenix V6, to Hemi 6.1 VVT. Rubicon to include front & rear lockers on solid 1-ton axles from Power Wagon. Chrysler has a great parts bin, start leveraging it. |

We owned a Commader and Chrysler ended up buying it back under the Lemon Law due to ECU and Stability control issues...We have a beautiful 09 Liberty that we love, and the 'baby commander' styling works better on the libby ....I have to agree with Sergio though, I always said The Commander was a product of Daimler...I like the direction Jeep is taking now with the GC and I am looking forward to the Grand Wagoneer....

Uhhhhh, Mr. Marchionne is obviously an Italian IDIOT! His comments about the Commander are proof that he has NO IDEA what Jeep is all about. I have owned a Commander since 2006 and save for some ECU issues it has been a great looking, dependable Jeep. Bold looks (actually looks like a Jeep), good V8 performance and 7 seats for the kids. The only complaint I have is that it should have a solid front axle but I’m sure Mr. Marchionne would rather eat Mexican food than have a solid axle in a Jeep!! A$$! I hate to see what this new "Grand Waggoner" will look like. I am picturing a tall all wheel drive mini-van with faux wood sides. If it is based on the new Grand Cherokee I hope it doesn't share ANY body panels as the new Grand Cherokee is an ugly, wimpy looking Jeep that should be wearing a Mitsubishi nameplate. It looks like every other SUV on the road!! He should be embarrassed for Jeep to release such a wimpy, gutless looking vehicle. Jeep used to innovate, not follow others. A Jeep used to be a Jeep and looked and performed like NOTHING else... these days are long gone, replaced by watered down Italian influenced JUNK! The sad thing is that people will buy these Grand Cherokees based on loyalty alone, I will NOT be one of them.
F$#* Marchionne!!!! |
