Autoblog recently had the opportunity to ask Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne a few questions - one of them about the possibility of a diesel Wrangler:
Q: Can we get a diesel Jeep Wrangler?
A: Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said a diesel is very desirable in the Wrangler and a distinct possibility. There is demand for it. Other Chrysler execs even told Autoblog there is a business case trying to be made. Stay tuned.
There are some other interesting tidbits in the interview - be sure to check it out.

I triple dawg dare you to put a diesel in the US Wrangler!
Enough with the playground tough talk... Put up, or shut up. I got another $35,000 right here if you do it. |

It would sure seem to make sense. My guess is the MPG for the diesel and the new Pentagram V6 will be very similar. Maybe 2-3 MPG difference at most. But a Wrangler needs lots of torque, so people will buy it for that reason. And when our supply of petroluem-based oil runs thin, it will burn veggie oil, thus we won't be stranded.
What spooked me about the interview was the comment that the new Jeep Pick-up would be a flatbed! What is that about? I want the retro Willys PU look with the spare on the side. |

Don't bet on it! Why? BECAUSE WE ASKED FOR IT.
It seems Jeep engineers are more concerned with market demographics than buyer's requests... Back around 1980 Cadillac took a V8 gas engine and converted it to diesel with miserable results. The US market said, "Diesel = bad", and so automakers built and imported only gas cars to the US. Unfortunately, nobody cares that the Cadillac tragedy took place OVER 30 YEARS AGO. And even worse, despite all the begging and pleading for a fuel efficient, high torque, all-day idling, durable diesel, Jeep just. won't. listen. |
