Jeep CEO Gets a Hemi V8 Wrangler for Evaluation

Autoblog is reporting that AEV recently stuffed a V8 Hemi into a Wrangler for Jeep CEO Michael Manley:

According to sources close to Chrysler, the 392-powered Jeep wasn't just built on a lark. Manley's Wrangler is apparently a mule for "executive evaluation." That's Chrysler speak for "they might build it." Manley's vehicle channels its 470 hp through a six-speed manual and will reportedly slide its back end in third gear with liberal application of the throttle.

I know the Pentestar is coming and Chrysler thinks thats the holy Grail of engines. Really - how many gears are the going to put behind a 3.6L? 7-speed manual and 6 speed auto? I really do love driving my Jeep, I just wish it had significantly more torque and tow capability. At $33,000 it wasn't cheap. It's like dating a beautiful, atheletic, gymnast with a heart of gold only to find out she's dim-witted... I have my doubts as to whether Chrysler and Fiat care about what the fanatical Jeep customer-base wants. They have the 1 of a kind product, we just keep buying them, why improve? Just release another trim package and different knobs with a catchy marketing ploy... That's all the American market needs.

I was looking for any hint of a down-side to that!! What? The top of her head isn't flat? Yeah, Chrysler is hanging a lot on the ~~Pentagram~~ er um Pentastar (23 models to get it... however they count that?!) but the increases in torque & HP are impressive --at least ON PAPER. now we'll have to see how it does ON & OFF PAVEMENT! I predict there will be a lot of old JK's up for sale... If it isn't "all that", I think I'll just have to buy a TJ and swap out a stroked Golen 4.6L H.O. (The Golen 4.6L stroker has been reviewed by JP magazine, producing 268hp @ 4900rpm and 324lbft @ 3900rpm on the engine dyno...)

That's great, if you're tryin' to fire through Lou's'ana blackjack with 1 tooth and your cousin/wife in the passenger seat, but what are the numbers in the actual range that crawlers use? 1000-2500rpm? What's it got in there? I'm sure it's more than the 4.0, but honestly, wtf care what it does at 4000rpm?

Golen engines have been respected by knowledgable Jeep enthusiasts for both on- & off-road use. They are rebuilt to provide lots of low end torque from the 4.0L block --arguably, the best & most reliable production engine ever put in a Jeep. Golen also offers several other engine choices. I think I'll send them an Invoice for all this advertising... Golen Engines (spec sheets, dyno charts) Review #1 Review #2 To Purchase one

If they said they were evaluating a Wrangler diesel for the U.S. market it would have been an April fools joke. Regular gas at Furnace Creek in Death Valley was $5.18 earlier this month. They have it and you need it. Unfortunately Diesel was up around $5.47, so diesel may not help as much as we'd all like, but the torque would be so sweet.
