LibertyKJ to Debut in January?

The Toledo Blade is reporting that the next-generation Cherokee (or is it "Liberty", or "Freedom", or "Cherokee Dakar"...) will make its debut at the Detroit Car Show in January. Here's the scoop:

Toledo Jeep Assembly Plantís latest entrant into the sport-utility vehicle sales race is expected to make its public debut in January in Detroit at the countryís most important auto show, a few months before hitting dealership lots nationwide, industry sources confirmed yesterday.

DaimlerChrysler AGís U.S. side likely will unveil the still-unnamed Jeep during media previews for the North American International Auto Show. It is to open to the public from Jan. 13 to 21 at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit. The show, sponsored by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, is one of the top five in the world and draws about 6,000 journalists and 800,000 attendees.

Automaker spokesman Heather May said DaimlerChrysler doesnít reveal where or when it plans to introduce new vehicles.

Prototypes of the new Jeep, code-named KJ, are being made in a new $600-million Toledo Jeep factory off Stickney Avenue. Sellable KJs will be made next spring, joining Toledo-made Cherokees and Wranglers and Detroit-made Grand Cherokees under the Jeep umbrella on dealership lots next summer.

So far, the only image customers have of the KJ, which eventually will replace the aging Jeep Cherokee, are of rounded but camouflaged lines captured by so-called spy photographers. Some die-hard Cherokee fans have criticized the KJís looks and other rumored attributes, but DaimlerChrysler maintains people shouldnít pass judgement until its unveiling.

The KJ will be a fresh addition to Jeepís display at the Detroit auto show as more compact SUVs, including the recently released Ford Escape, enter the market and clamor for attention.

here is my comment I should be receiving our 2001 Cherokee this week. After seeing the new KJ spy photos and comments regarding the new Jeep I figured I better get one of the last of the good Cherokees.

Thanks for the insight

Make sure the body panels are aluminum, independent coil suspension, 5-speed auto box, 2.8 liter turbo-diesel intercooled comon-rail mill, square-edged design and toyota-quality; this jeep's gonna read kool-jeep.

I wish Craig and Joe. Those ideas would make a killer overseas Jeep but don't count on DC to back anything that reasonable. Plus the KJ doesn't sound like what you want. Its very cutesy. What about the XJ Cherokee. I know in europe it has a Diesel engine and you can get selectrac four wheel drive that has full time four wheel drive. It definately has toyota quality on the drivetrain. The transmission is made by the same people who make toyotas truck fourspeed autos and the manual is solid as a brick. But I'd watch out for the KJ it hasn't been getting rave reviews from the Jeepsters in America.

I hope daimler-chrysler releases a powerful compact turbo-diesel intercooled common-rail type engine in automatic form coupled to a full-time 4wd system. Its time they paid attention to the European and Asian suv markets. I'm totally lost as to what vehicle to purchase here in Malaysia because Chrysler doesn't put much commitment in this market. Bring a TDI engine, coil suspension, full-time 4wd and top quality build & seals, this truck would beat all the other non-American suvs.

After reading a article on car and truck news i would put my money on the KJ (Krappy Jeep) not being named Freedom but maybe Liberty. But there is still 2 months till January, I'm sure they can change the possible name of the KJ atleast 2 or 3 time before its debut. And oh how excited all of us Jeepers are about the debut of the KJ at the Detroit Auto Show.... Not quite.
