LibertyConsumer Reports Says Jeep Liberty has "Worst in Class" MPG for Small SUVs

No one has ever bought a Liberty for the gas milage, right?

Consumer Reports recently announced their best and worst new cars for fuel economy - naming the Jeep Liberty as "Worst in Class" for the "small SUV" category. The Liberty was tied with the Dodge Nitro SLT at 16mpg. The Ford Escape Hybrid took top honors in the category with 26mpg.

From the press release:

The full list of vehicles is available in the magazine's July issue on sale June 7th.

"Hybrid and diesel vehicles provide better fuel economy than conventional cars, but they usually cost more to buy, and as gas prices rise, the pay-back time gets shorter," said David Champion, Senior Director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut. "All-wheel drive usually reduces gas mileage by about 2 mpg while a manual transmission can improve fuel economy by 1 to 2 mpg."

Ford Escape Hybrid 4WD costs $33145.
Dodge Nitro 4WD costs $23995. (Jeep a tad more)
Diff = $9150 (Not including rebates, options, blah blah blah...)

I travel ~300miles/wk, or ~15000mi/yr. So that's ~19 gallons/wk in a Liberty/Nitro. We have one of each, actually.

If I was stupid enough --er, um, I mean rich enough-- to buy the Escape Hybrid, I would use ~11.5gallons/wk, but, hey, I'd have braggin' rights at the Espresso Bar and I'd save 7.5 gallons/wk. At $4/gallon, that's $30/wk or about $1500 per year.

So, when gas is $4, the breakeven point is roughly ~6years. When it's $3, that makes it ~8 years.

And all that while I'd have to be SEEN in a Hybrid Escape, wear clogs, skip deodorant, and pray all the extra green gizmos don't break.

I'll keep my MOPARs, thanx. Buy the green machine, if U want, but it'll take 6-8 years to start seeing the money back in your wallet... at which point you may need to buy another battery pack for $3000+ labor. And that's if all else goes well...

P.S. And don't forget to keep those battery packs away from my landfill!

Uh oh... Time for Jeep to "fix" the problem by going from a 3.8 liter engine to a 3.6, resulting in a 10% economy increase.

Meanwhile, enthusiasts yearning for innovation look elsewhere...
