LibertyCurrent Generation Liberty Assembly Shut Down

The Toledo Blade is reporting that the current generation Jeep Liberty assembly shut down will be August 16. I think we are going to see the boxy Liberty transform itself into a much more car like vehicle...think about Hondo's redo of the CR-V and Ford's redo of the Escape and I think you see the trend for what compact SUVs are going to look like. I think it's a mistake but then I'm still a big fan of the original classic Cherokee look.

Jeep will stop building the Liberty sport utility vehicle on Aug. 16, a move that will eliminate some jobs at local suppliers that did not get contracts for the incoming model. However, other suppliers stand to add workers when Jeep begins producing the next-generation replacement in 2013.

It's a shame, of course, but it seems Latest one time, all management decisions Jeep look very farsighted. On the other hand, will now be able to throw all their forces to produce more successful models. And to develop new hits sales. So the news is likely to generally positive with a touch of sentimental sadness.

Best regards, TomCtr

I figured this was coming. We've had three Liberties, after several XJs. The Libby is a bit shy in clearance, but is more civilized, roomy, and the traction control works well. We like the looks and size, which has kept us from the Grand. Mileage is not great, 16 in town, 20 or so on trips.

We don't need a Wrangler, but like low range and want something at least in the same league as a Liberty. Perhaps if they take the first two gears of the 9-speed auto and use them as a low range, they can make a crawler out of an Alfa. I am doubtful, and may have to go big and get a Grand next time.

Our family has five Jeeps. My wife and I have a 2003 WJ Grand Cherokee; a 2009 KK Liberty, and a 98 XJ Cherokee. Our son has a 2012 Liberty, Artic Edition and a go to work 98 XJ Cherokee with 360,000 miles on it.

The current gen Liberty should have been the natural extention of the XJ, not the Patriot. It is a fine vehicle and while not in the same league as a Wrangle off-road, it did fine on the trails in Colorado and Utah we visited this year.

Sad news. But I think Liberty's poor gas mileage is the reason it doesn't sell better, not its boxy appearance. The Liberty and Patriot are the only distinctive 4x4 wagons on the market. Everything else looks like everything else, including the Grand Cherokee. Hopefully Jeep will at least kill off the Plymouth Compass next year.

I agree with Mike's comment in regard to the classic Cherokee. It was probably the best looking SUV ever. I dont regard the Wrangler as an SUV as it is in a different league.
