The Detroit Free Press has an article about the success of DaimlerChrysler's newest diesel vehicles in the United States. Here's a snippet:

Pickup truck and Jeep buyers are choosing diesel engines at a far greater rate than expected, Chrysler Group's new chief of product development said Thursday, and the automaker plans to offer them in more models.

"We anticipated we'd sell about 5,000 Jeep Liberty models with a diesel this year, but we've already sold 6,000 and it looks like we'll hit 8,000 by the end of the year," Frank Klegon told me in an interview, referring to this year's introduction of diesels into Jeep SUVs in the U.S. market.

Why is DC so surprised? What makes them think the North Americans are so different than the rest of the world. Now if DC would treat us north americans comparably, then we would also have the diesel available with the six speed manual and a 3 liter diesel for the GC. And, after equality, how about providing us with the diesel and six speed manuals in the Wrangler ... that ought to send diesel sales out-of-sight!

"Klegon wouldn't reveal what models Chrysler will equip with diesels next, or when to look for them. But the Chrysler 300 sedan and Grand Cherokee SUV might be good bets because the automaker is already selling those models with diesel engines in Europe."

Well, duh. Look at the price of fuel! It would be irrational to buy a vehicle with a gasoline engine now. I'd very much like to have the 2006 JGC Overland with a Diesel engine, Dynamic Handling System, skid plates, and Quadra-Drive II. (I would replace the stock tires with Toyo Proxes S/T tires.) I really don't want to have to transport the vehicle across the pond...
