Grand CherokeeRumor: Bluetec Diesel Coming to 2007 Grand Cherokee
Posted by mike on 2006/2/22 20:44:00 (5906) reads

One of our readers has told us that he's heard from some DaimlerChrysler contractors that the 2007 Grand Cherokee will have a Bluetec diesel as an option at a 2007 model.

Our source says that production will begin in November, with the first vehicles hitting the dealers in early 2007.

You can check out some information on the Bluetec Grand Cherokee concept vehicle in this previous article we posted.

it is possible to use some of the engineering from a v8 to make an I6. for example the Viper engine was based off of the LA series engines. the LA series started life as a V8 but it was made into a V10 V6 and a I4. if they had a V12 Hemi design in the works they could just use one bank.what i mean to say is if they use the Hemi as the basis for the new Viper engine they could turn it into a I6.i am not saying that they would do it but they could.

Ahh.. that makes more sense to me. I guess I would be happier with a hemi head i6 than the minivan engine. But you would still be left with a peaky engine you need to run premium gas in to get the big output numbers...not exactly a dream trail engine. I am nervous anbout the urea because systems on some trucks I have seen in CA have to fill up every tank or every other tank. Hopefully the trucks I saw were more proof of concept type of things and not end products. But when you think of the tremendous volume of air going in and exhaust going out of an engine injected a little urea to treat the exhaust could still get consumed npretty quickly. .

Uhhh not to be a jerk xjguy. But how would you base a straight six on a v8 engine? I want a diesel but if you have to fill the bluetech with urea that kills a lot of interest for me. Will the urea just be to make it CA and NY New England legal? I hope so. Having a 500 mile range is usless if you have to keep stopping to pee in your engine

I think what xjguy means is a Hemi I-6. In other words a I-6 that uses hemispherically shaped combustion chambers. Also I don't think the urea filter wouldn't be so bad if it only had to be filled ever 3000-5000 miles or whenever you had the oil changed.

it is sad that chrysler is canning the 4.0 I6. it was and is a good engine. i understand the tooling is old and worn-out. i think this is the first time that chrysler is not sellling an I6 in the us. i am surprised that they arn't comming up with an I6 based off of the HEMI. all of chrysler's I6's have all been legends, flat-head 6 to the slant 6 through the jeep I6. the bluetec might just be the the engine that will fill the gap.

That is very encouraging. I can't see how they wouldn't build a diesel Wrangler then. There was no demand for a diesel Liberty, and little for a diesel Grand Cherokee but both are available with diesels in overseas markets. For 2007 Jeep has disclosed that the Wrangler diesel is for export. I think the diesel Wrangler is coming to the US.
If they are smart they will unvail the 4-door Wrangler with the Bluetec at the NYC auto show.

I think they are waiting on the switch to ultra low sulfer diesel here in the US. This will allow the use of emissions control equipment (like what is featured in the Bluetech concept) that will allow the Diesel Jeeps to be sold in all 50 states. I believe that ULSD is suppose to be on sale by september next year. I would expect that we will begin to see a lot more cool Diesels here in the US after that.

I love the idea of diesel engines. Unfortunately, the price of diesel fuel is 10% higher than gasoline.

Recovering the extra cost a Bluetec Grand Cherokee will command over a Hemi Grand Cherokee will be near impossible during a 3-5 year owner cycle.

Also, the new ULSD will most likely cost even more than the current formulation, making it even harder to justify the extra cost of a diesel engine.

Yes the price of diesel is currently more. However, the 3.2L Bluetec has a combined fuel economy of about 30mpg.

The 3.2L diesel (although not equipped with the Bluetec technology) was tested in a real world, cross-country test in the Mercedes M-Class. It had an average fuel economy of 32mpg (better than the Lexus RXh).

Compare roughly 30mpg of real world mileage to the Hemi's EPA-estimated 16mpg and you see that the cost of the diesel quickly drop. Diesel would have to cost nearly 45% more than gasoline for the Bluetec to be more expensive when it comes to fuel.

The base price may more than other GC's but over four or five years you still are going to be cheaper with the diesel. Not to mention, you are depending less on foreign oil fields (as the Bluetecs are capable of running on biodiesel).

If this is true I hope that a Diesel Wrangler won't be far behind.
