A recent article in the Toledo Blade says that all may not be well in Toledo. Last week Chrysler broke ground on their new $1.2 billion Jeep assembly plant in Toledo. The plant is scheduled to produce the next generation Jeep Cherokee beginning in 2001. According to the article, it seems that the city of Toledo has not yet secured all of the land at the site for the new plant...

Behind the smiles, handshakes, and bear hugs at Wednesday's groundbreaking for Chrysler Corp.'s Toledo Jeep assembly plant were fears that problems acquiring commercial property in the project's path could delay the introduction of a vehicle crucial to the company's marketing strategy in the opening years of the 21st century.

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner is scrambling to find an additional $20 million to purchase and prepare a 450-acre site in North Toledo off Stickney Avenue to turn over to Chrysler officials for its new factory, which is expected to assemble the next generation of Jeep Cherokees.

The article also lists an impressive list of incentives that the city of Toledo has given Chrysler in order to locate the plant within the city limits.
